has anyone tried to make a flashlight out of parts at the hardware store. It seems like it'd be possible since a large number of custom lights look like certain pipe fittings you'd find at your local home depot.

There's been a couple (some looked really nice too!). Most recently, PEU did a Franken-light using pieces of pipe and odd parts.

I am planing on doing one that would be fairly dim (no lux just a regular rat shack style 5mm LED), but all of metal pipping. Its gonna be really heavy. And not useful for anything.

I had that idea once, but I too concluded it would be too heavy for practicle use.

On a side note we have a few trailer socket testers at work to test the connection for lights, turn signals, reverse, electric brakes, etc. They are nice looking electrical boxes with incand bulbs and multiple plumbing pipe fittings to go from the box to the connector.

I made a tobacco type pipe from plumbing parts once.:toilet: I just thought it'd be possible to use a brass pipe fitting and mill out the inside to accept a battery, say a AAA. Then use the threads to secure a lamp assembly and lens. plumbers tape would make it watertight and an o-ring behind the lens. Okay, it's a lot of work. If you did it right it'd be dive capable.

There was a fellow that used to meander around here quite a bit. Made some stuff out of a plumber's boneyard. Got pretty good at it.

Elektrolumens Prototype.

I made an RGB torch a while back, three sliders controlled either the colour in static mode or speed in colour cycling mode. PVC piping was very easy to use, lots of space for the electronics and you could use all the little attachments to make it 'torch' like.
The construction was put up at OddOnes site....but it isn't working for me at the moment.

I'm sure that various pipe fittings have found their way into many lights. The body of the Milky Candle, for example, is made of a large PVC compression union.

Did it. Removed the light engine from a 1AA 8 LED light, and used PVC to make a body for one CR123 cell. Only has momentary function mostly because here 1 CR123 cell costs as much as 4 D size Duracells. Switch used was one of those small, square (6x6mm?) momentary switches from radios, VCRs, discman etc.

I'm tempted to make one out of PVC to hold an MR16, partially because I'm a cheapass and partially because PVC does fairly well with heat.

There's someone who rides their bike and work in the same building as I do. He's got a bike light made out of PVC pipe and an MR16 lamp. S/he carries a 12V batt in a little pouch. Makes me wonder if it's a fellow flashaholic.

Hey carbine15, i had to smile

when i noticed this thread cos at the mo i`m tryin to make some bike lights out of copper/brass plumbing/pipe fittings, i dont have access to a machine shop, just basic power tools.
copper/brass will conduct the heat from a hard driven lux3 better than pvc....
with the battery pack and driver located elsewhere on the bike, the actual "lights" can be surprisingly tiny!!!! .... nothing more than a few mill. bigger than the led+McR20 reflector ......
i have no doubt that Electrolumens Quadstar bike lights and similar "flame throwers and barn burners" are fantastic pieces of quality kit......
..... but i really like teeny weeny tiny lights
