Flashlight that got you "HOOKED"?

It probably got started with a Mag a loooong time ago.
But it really caught fire when I got my old Fenix P1D.
I was just amazed at the amount of light that was coming out of that little thing.

Back in around 1980 or so I went to a Ringling Brothers Circus and got this cool flashlight with a red cone on it, after I broke the cone off I had my very first flashlight 🙂 I can remember it being very bright (back then) because my Dad would use it before his own when checking on the cattle. BTW I would have been around 10 years old then lol. The Fenix L2D CE I bought from 4Sevens on 6/7/07 sparked interest again though..

What got me started was soldering a 10,000 mcd yellow LED from Rat Shack onto a 2.4 volt nicad button cell stack many years ago. At that point, I knew the future of LED flashlights would be bright.

Latest acquisition: a 1W LED focusable upgrade for my early 1980s 2AA Maglite.

Always like to make sure I had plenty of lights around but the one that started cravings was the pelican M6 led.

I had a 3 LED light that was a tad bit smaller than a 6P but functioned the same way.

I used it for about 6 months in the car when I needed to look for something or work on the car or others at night.

A friend said "Man! My SureFire would blow that out of the water".

I lost that light but about 2 years later I was sitting there and it came to me, SUREFIRE!!

Bought a 6P and never looked back.

(I just wish I still had the 6P)

Believe it or not it was an old railroad signal lantern that my dad gave me when I was 10 or so. It was a big horseshoe handled thing with two naked bulbs, one in a reflector and one just sitting outside. Had a big toggle switch to select the bulbs and could not have been over 10 lumens. It had no lenses and ran on the 6v lantern battery. I took that thing everywhere. 😉

It was the unreliability of the $2 flashlights that got me into the better models available. I couldn't stand whacking the lights over and over to get it to work when I needed it.

I never have to do that these days. First light to ever make me go "whoa" was the HDS models from HDS systems (now Ra Lights). Nothing better in the market when it comes to general all purpose lights.

Well I've always liked small flashlights since I was a little kid in the mid 70s. I distinctly remember replacing the non-replaceable "N" size batteries in one of those two N cell side by side squeeze lights. This involved peeling off the battery wrappers to make it work. My dad is a EE, so had lots of breadboards, Tandy Kits, soldering stations and the like arround. I played with these at an early age.

**EDIT**
Wow, I can't believe you can still buy that N cell piece of crap! @ $8 too! You would be hard pressed to find a worse light! 😱 A $7 mag solitare would be a major upgrade.

**End EDIT**

The flashlight upgrade and LED addiction started later in about 1995 with the Yellow Photon I, which later led to a Photon 2 (1997), then that led to a CMG Infinity (circa2000) I found CPF in 2001 and that led to the first release ARC AAA, and its been downhill since then.

The original question was when did you first realize you had a problem. That came much later, I might still be in denial. I would guess I recognized I had a problem when I started to sell unneeded lights on CPF, some of which saw very very little use, But I just use any money recovered to fund new lights. 😗

Hey, I know _exactly_ the lantern you describe, a friend of mine just picked one of those up at the GoodWill here. They are chrome plated & beautiful. Cool light!

Was searching the internet for "flashlight" and ran across this site. Purchased my first real flashlight (a Surefire C3 ) which I still have. That was back in early '04! I can't remember why I was searching for flashlights, I guess I was interested in them and didn't even know it

I've always liked flashlights, but recall being especially enthused when I first discovered Underwater Kinetics flashlights, then a little while later, the Streamlight Scorpion. I was set for a number of years...until I stumbled onto the Bright Guy website.

It was 3 Years Ago Today . . . .

I received my very first Luxeon flashlight.

Up until that day, i'd seen 'em in magazine articles and such,

but i'd never actually seen any "Power-LED" flashlight in person.

My only experience with LED's was the 5mm LED emitters.

Received my yellow StreamLight ProPolymer 4AA Luxeon, from BrightGuy.

(i had chosen this light cuz' it got the 5-Star rating from FLR)

Well, i installed the (included) alkaline batteries, and clicked it "on".

My immediate reaction was:

W_O_W ! ! !

This is BRIGHT ! ! !

So THAT's what everyone is talking about !

:wow:

Just as an aside, that was the same day that 4Seven's
(now 3-year-old) daughter was born !

Strange, but true !

I appreciated flashlights for years as practical tools, but the eternaLight was the one that "pushed me over the edge"!!

I went the Mag Lite route starting to collect, then I got a SureFire 6P and L1 Lumamax...and I was off to the races. $2 grand later, and I'm still having self control issues. 🤢:sigh:

I believe the one light that officially got me "hooked" was my Sharper Image 10 million candlepower spotlight I bought well over a year ago.

My first three flashlights that got me hooked was the minimag and these two when they came out when I was a kid http://www.flashlightmuseum.com/Rayovac-Flashlight-3-Cell-Workhorse-Light-3D-1985 and http://www.flashlightmuseum.com/Duracell-Flashlight-DFC-Hand-Held-Compact-with-Copper-Top-2AA-1985 which I made use with my RC cars.

People must have figured I liked flashlights even when I was in grade three because I still remember overhearing the mom of a friend of mine while in school yard during recess, telling him she got a flashlight for my birthday and it turned out to be the Rayovac 3 Cell "Workhorse" so many years ago...

My first real lights was not until I started looking for lights again and got the original JetBeam JET-1 MK.1/MK.2 in which I still use the MK.2 (and 14500) as my main EDC. It has a very nice smooth beam and a tiny bit of purple tint, so why not.
