I owned a 3D mag and a mag solitaire for years. I never carried them and neglected them so much that the (alkaline) batteries in the 3D had leaked and expanded so they were stuck. I just replaced it through a certain warehouse chain's generous return policy. Still, they worked and I NEVER checked them or went out at night with them at all. My first EDC was technically my Sony Ericsson's led flash, which could be turned on permanently to serve as a flashlight. I had that little sucker for two years but it died a premature death in the salty Atlantic. I appreciated it much more for the camera than for the light, even though I often saw the use of having a light with you all the time after having carried it.
I blame Home Depot's Husky. After firing that bad boy up, I was taken aback. I own 7 Master Replica lightsabers and I realized that what fascinated me so about those guys was the light. I loved the way it reflected and illuminated (as light is wont to do). The Husky was my first experience with this generation's Cree lighting. It was like a giant lightsaber and I immediately came here and read up much more about it. I found out about the smaller but just as delightful Taskforce 2C (cree). I figured I was done . . . until I decided to take the plunge into lithium-ion batteries and 6P sized lights, that's when Dereelights got into my blood. To date, I take my two DBS's out every night with me, one with an R2 pill and a smooth reflector and the other with an MC-E pill and (obviously) an orange peel reflector. I EDC either a Nitecore D10 or my Dereelight C2H from www.flashlightconnection.com (Flashcrazy's site for Dereelights and other kinds of lights).
I know the above sounds like a commercial, but really, I've always prided myself on being objective so after I got my CL1H (6P size) and my DBS's, I went ahead and invested in a Malkoff drop-in for a Surefire 6P. I also got one for my Mag 3D. While I really enjoy Malkoff's quality beam profile due to his optic, the bodies and styling of the Dereelights really have my heart, hence, Dereelights really are the brand that got me hooked. I've now got an MD2 with one of Gene's drop-ins as well, but it sits between my Fenix LD20 and my Surefire 6P (with an M60).
