Flashlights?

I'm new here as you may tell from my account name and the number of posts. I came here initially for lasers, but I don't see the big hype in flashlights? I'm kinda interested and surprised to see such a big community for flashlights. Does anyone have any pictures of flashlights they can show, that may sparkle my interest?

So, why flashlights?

Why lasers?

I don't get it, but I suspect it is the same reason.

Welcome to CPF./ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink2.gif Flashlights are a big deal to a "Flashaholic" /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
Here is a photo for ya!

Caution ....You may become a Flashaholic too! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/nana.gif

I would say that these days, you are better off having a flashlight in your hand than a laser. People are getting more and more paranoid about them than ever. So instead of getting yourself into trouble, why not become a flashaholic? There are great benefits! Your wallet loses weight, your hobby wont make others nervous around you, and more!

I think, as with most things, the more you learn about something the more interesting it becomes.

Flashlights are cool just on the surface. Light where there was none, wherever and whenever you want it.

Then you start getting into the practical: yes, that 4-D Mag-Lite is really nice in the dark, but no way I can pack that around in my pocket all day for that 30 seconds when I might need soe light.

And then you start to look around, and see that you really can have a 4-D-equivalent light that will fit in your shirt pocket. Hmmm. . .

Then you see that you can have a light that doesn't appreciably dim as its batteries drain, or won't ever need a new bulb. It starts to look interesting.

Then you discover special purpose lights: those for self defense, diving, hiking, aviation. More interesting.

At first you get a cheap one because "there ain't no dam way I'm spendin' that on no dam light." Uh-huh.

You start to carry it regularly since it is so small. Then you start to use it, because you have it. Then you start saying, "if I had this other light, I could do this thing better." Reading in the car. Getting up for a drink at night. Avoiding dog poop at the inlaws' place. Fixing that leak in the roof. Personal safety and emergency use, that is my weakness.

In the broadest sense, I think we flashaholics are just tinkerers and gadgeteers of one particular flavor. When some people are left idly, grab a beer and stare at the TV while they delicately recharge their mental capacity. Usually that involves at least some mouth breathing. (I think anyone, regardless of intelligence, can fall into that trap.)

But others seem to gravitate toward something that holds interest and develops some mental challenges. It is a healthy hobby that keeps the mind sharply tuned and active. I think for a lot of people, it could just as easily be ham radio, archery, model railroading, or lasers.

What I personally get out of flashlights is the ability to do things in spite of the dark. It sounds simple, but it is really satisfying.

Well said.

I can see I fall into a recognizable pattern.
I guess more of my watch money will be diverted to lights!

Wow, that was a trip down memory lane..
You left out the second mortgage though.. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Why flashlights? because it gets dark and sometimes you don't have any light unless you bring your own. Some people just like to have just enough light at the cheapest price while others of us like to have excess light and are willing to pay more for a variety of light output formats.

As long as it gets dark... there will be a need for flashlights, and flashaholics will make sure better lights are available cheaper for the non enthusiasts.

I think they're all neat. A laser is kinda just like a flashlight with a super tight beam, right? I use them both, but my flashlights get a lot more use than my lasers. Thus, I spend more money on flashlights, and I talk more about them. They're all fun, and they all deserve some attention now and then, though.

There's folks that only care for LEDs, some that only care for incandescents, all over the place. There are so many options it's not funny, really. There's nothing that I won't look at, they all intrigue my interests. Of course, my wallet doesn't like me for it. .

I too came here for the lasers and I thought the same thing...at first. As you can see I'm pretty new here and with good flashlights in general. Well, I just got my first SureFire in the mail today, an E2e, and now feel that I could easily go broke with these things. I now feel like an accepted member of this community. All I can say is buy one and start to talk here, you will get it. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinser2.gif

That is a very clever photo...I love it. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

You know you are a flashaholic when you have this many lights within reach of you when you are sitting at your desk:

FlashlightsWithinEasyReachOfMyDesk.jpg

Yep, I did not even have to get out of my chair to get all of those together...

I need help. Seriously. Is there a Flashaholics Anonymous I can sign up for? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/help.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif

Yes there is deranged coder.

All you have to do is send all of your lights to me, and then whatever money from your paycheck that isn't absolutly vital for you to servive on (no buying flashlights!) gets rerouted to my bank account. It's that easy /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Of course, if you get arrested for stealing lights it isn't my fault /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleye11.gif

Damn, thats scary! I'm still a newbie in the "there ain't no dam way I'm spendin' that on no dam light." phase! My "expensive" lights are a Q-3 and a 9.6v Mag 2D (modifying it in increments, eventually to be a Mag85) ... Uh-Oh! LOL!

That is exactly how it started for me...

I think the one key that will spark your intrest, aside from a really cool photo, is a situation when you really need a light. Then you dont have one (or have a really crappy one) and you come out of it vowing never again to have to go through that... thats how it started for me.

BlueMars,

You might poke your head into the "Flashlight collecting" area to see some cool pix.

Welcome to CPF, have fun watching the $$ gently floating out of your wallet while you sit idly by. It's almost Zen. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

At my desk, in various drawers, and around me, I can reach four Surefires (one is a PR-T hybrid), a noname 3AAA light, my Mag4D with 6 SubCs and Pelican bulb, and a Mag2HID. On me right now are the usual U2, small keychain light with 26Kmcd LED, and E1e+KL1. It helps that I'm fully dressed and sitting next to my workbench too..

You're scaring me. That's TEN lights that I can grab-n-go if I had to.

Didn't anybody tell you about the rest of the forums? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/evilgrin07.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

KevinL -

Could you or would you shrink that graphic?

800 x 600 resolution over here.

Thanks
