I saw the MG products on shiningbeam.com I'm looking for a weapon mounted light to mount on my dangerous game rifle for trekking/hunting through bear country in the early morning or late evening. I like the new MG RX with sst 50 and I also like the p-rocket premium which is nice cause its more compact than the other one. I'm wondering which would be better for my purpose... I don't want a flashlight that gives me tunnel vision.. the area I hunt and live in is very dense so if my flashlight gives me a tunnel of light its not gonna help if there's a bear 3 feet to the left of me and the flashlight beam is not wide enough for me to se him. I need something that has a nice wide beam and I can have a wide field of view in front of me.

get a zebralight H501 and hook it somewhere on you?
or even a UF-H2

these should be able to serve as your floodlight..

I have a light with an SST-50 and it's really bright and has a decent amount of throw.

since you're in the bush, I'd recommend looking at the same/similar LED with a warm tint. Things will look more natural.

If I were in your shoes, I'd get a Surefire weapon light then send it to MilkySpit for an upgrade with a warm LED.

what is the actually difference between a floodlight and a "thrower" ... I hear some people say a flood light is better for lighting up a larg area in front of you while a "thrower" or spot light is better for longer distances and a tight beam. Am I accurate on this description. can someone post photos if they have any?

Yep, you are grasping the concepts just right. Of course there are lights in between and lights with a good spot that throws a long way, but also bright enough side spill to let you see around you.

I own the P-rocket neutral white and it is a powerful light, on maximum it will light up a large area and still have some distance ("throw") due to the sheer power of the light. I'd go with neutral white as i feel that it renders colors better but that's just my personal opinion.

Are you trying to light up targets, then shoot them? Then get the x-thrower

The p-rocket on maximum only throws as well as the x-thrower on medium.

and what kind of runtime are you trying to get.
Maybe a Fenix TK30 would serve you better.

More for self defense then for lighting up and shooting... so I need to illuminate the trail in front of me and in a nice wide beam so I can see around me. and atleat 50 yards in front of me
Thanks a lot for the help

Thanks... I saw a nice light the other day that someone has posted on here its called the Lumapower D-mini VX ultra, which is a 550 lumen flood light... and then get the turbo head which turns it into a spotlight... that would be cool this way I have both of those options.

What's your budget and what kind of gun will you be mounting it on?

I'm a huge fan of weapon lights, but their are some important considerations when choosing.

Using a weapon mounted light for navigation is a bad plan in general because you are muzzling whatever you are looking at. Also, depending on the weapon, the light will dramatically change the balance and swing of the gun.

Perhaps the best solution to your situation would be a good head lamp and a gun light. A nice floody beam on your head for spotting things in the threat zone out to 15 yds. Then mount a smallish throwy light on the gun for shooting and longer distance navigation. When mounted properly, the hotspot on a thrower acts as a "laser sight" for extremely rapid target acquisition (just center the bright spot on it and bang).

good poiny. Its going on a marlin 1895 .45-70 lever gun. its far enough away from the muzzle. It kicks more then a shotgun with the loads i'm using... but i'm sure any decent qualit LED light should be able to handle it. regarding the weight... thats why I figured to get the p-rocket cause its small but lights everything up around me. I hear you with the beam and using it to aim. I will be getting tritium sights so thats not a big deal... I also have a small laser lightweight laser I could put on it which I already sighted in for 50 yards... its a tri-beam laser. I guess I have to to do some thinking. The only reason I was thinking the p-rocket which is floody... I want a sort of universal weapon light for this gun... which can cover a wide range of situations from having to spotlight a target at say 100 yards or less to trekking through the woods and giving could views all around me. I don't want to have a different light for eadch situation... this way it simplifies things.
