I needed a name to develop my brand of lights, because these are designed and made in Sydney, Australia. I have decided to call my products...

Forgot to comment earlier, but I think that name is HOT! It is refined, memorable and just plain catchy. I think you have a winner with GILI!
 
The Machinist has finally got around to this job, all front and rear sections have been made.

The custom cutters required for the main body section have been made and are being used on the main section, hopefully everything should be done by end of next week.

I have received all other associated material. Here is a quick pic.



Amongst that pile is the switches, screws, silicone orings, silicone hookup wire, tinned power cable, grommets and molex plugs!

How well will this light work helmet mounted? Do you have a source for a compatible helmet mount?
 
These look great. To bad I won't settled in my finances for a bit or I would get one. Maybe the 7up verion?
 
All parts have been machined, they have been sent to be anodized today.

Huge apologies for the delay's, the late arrival of custom cutters used on the main section threw everything out of whack.

I would like to try and get everyone who hasn't yet paid the full amount (excluding whoever I haven't already made prior arrangements with) to pay over the next week so that I can get them all sent off on the same day.

I will be including 1m of quality two core tinned cable (which suits the cable grommet) if you want extra lengths please add $3/meter (price includes shipping)

So I am thinking about setting up my MaxflexV5. I have some 4x18650 3.7 packs in series therefore 14.8v driving the 6xXPG also in series. I'll most likely run this to the max 1200mA (with the 5 Maxflex settings why not). I am looking for some help in choice of some settings...

What do you all think the V Cut, V Med and V Low should be set at?

What about thermal protection level? Matt any thoughts here?

Any thoughts or experiences - mostly for the V Cut setting would be appreciated.

Oh I should add I don't know if my packs are protected or not (they are packaged from an older Vicious Power HID - I can't easily get inside the carbon fiber pack...). Should this matter?

Regarding the Thermal cutout, I haven't had a chance to do comprehensive thermal testing yet (I am waiting on large LED order from cutter) once that is done, I will post an update. But I would suggest keeping it at its minimum, default for now.

AW's 18650 cells have a low discharge value of 2.5v, so I guess V Low (cutout) should be about 10v. But I am not an expert on batteries, especially the one that you mentioned, so it would be good if someone could confirm.

V-med would be halfway in between 10v and 14.8v

For the warning and cutoff voltage, you can basically take TaskLEDs default values (which are for a 2 Li Ion pack) and double them. So for V Cut set it at 12V, V Low at 13V, and V Warn at 14.4V.

One thing to watch out for is a battery pack that sags significantly under load. I had this problem with a 4x 18650 pack that would drop 1-1.5V under the load of 7 XPGs at 1000ma, so it was triggering the voltage monitoring way too early. I ended up moving to a LiPo pack which has way lower internal resistance so sags a lot less under load.

I would set thermal protection as low as possible... 60C in this case is a good starting point and maybe move it up to 70C if it triggers too quickly.

My first guess was to double the 7.2V values in the manual. But it seemed to me that 12V V Cut was too high (most of the cells PCB are at 10 or 11V) and 14.4 V might be too low. But your right, in absence of alternatives I think I'll stick to your suggestion.

Has anyone done the math on run times for 6xXPG R5 at various MaxFlex settings from say a 2.4ah 4x18650. I guess about 2hours at max - am I right (forgive my feeble math ability)?

Unlike other battery chemistry, when lithium ion batteries are nearly depleted their voltage drops off very quickly. 3V is generally considered a good point to stop discharging at as the difference between 3V and say 2.5V is probably only a matter a few minutes in actual run time, but the potential to damage the battery by over-discharging increases. So if you're using 4 cells, 12V is a good point.
