Should be possible, i think? maybe there are more factors, but who knows? I guess it could be still called an LED, seeing as how light is all forms of electromagnetic radiation, from low freq. Radio to Devastatingly high freq. Gamma, but it's not light the way MOST people think about it (it is an energy wave/particle which could easily evaporate any matter that isn't already a gas, most ppl think of light as the stuff they use to see [visible], but that's only a small part of the spectrum, and it won't vaporize you, lol)

I doubt you'll see one anytime soon - probably not in any of our lifetimes.

Just getting LEDs to run in the UVA (long UV) is a pain in the toilet muscle, because the relatively high energy photons bombard the GaN lattice and disrupt it at the subatomic level. Every time you turn on a UV LED, you're destroying it.

At the present time, the barrier seems to be between 290 and 320nm. Laboratory examples have been created in this wavelength range (and there is hope for a 290nm LED sometime in this decade), but right now they self-destruct very quickly, most of them having a half-life measureable in seconds. Again, it's that darned pesky UV radiation breaking the atomic bonds in the LED's lattice structure. Think of what X-rays or gamma rays would do inside there. Ouch.

I care to differ. My son's phaser has been vaporizing everything in its path for the last year. In its operation, I have noticed a strange pulsing sound. I am thinking that the nutron coupler in the phaser is not getting enough dilithium modulation. For those more experience than me, is this sound normal or should I be concerned with the phaser's long term operation and th ability to disintergrate instantly?

Try replacing the .009 Kilovolt non-renewable electron flow induction energy storage device in the rear of the phaser. They're usually rectangular with positive and negative connection points on the top. This will help. Starfleet uses "Rayovac" last time I checked.

Mr. Quickbeam:

Thanks for the advice - obviously I am not as skilled as you in the ways of these high energy light emitting devices (HELED). Per your instruction, I did some dissassembly of the phaser but did not find the rectangular object you described. Perhaps you are mistaken for the model that I have (ARC Space Phaser Model 2) or there is an alternative power source. I have noticed that there are two cylindrical objects about two inches long and half inch in diameter in the handle. They have inscriptions on them that read "Energizer." Perhaps this is the device that provides the high energy field that is used to energize the phaser and which is need of replacement?

Please advise and provide instructions on its repair or replacement.

Ahhhh... You have the Mark II Phase Pistol. These use a pair of .0000015 Megavolt self consuming high valence electron current induction cylinders. Simply remove and replace.

OK... That's enough of that.....

I had the same problem till I gave it a squirt of WD.

I didn't know u were bombarding it with photons? I thought the way it works is that when electrons go over the P(ositive) doped area, they fall into "holes", therefore making the diode forward biased, since the electrons can only go in one direction. the size of the fall determines wavelength, which determines the energy. (when electrons in higher than normal "orbitals" drop, they release a photon)

Yes GREDs could easily be made, and they would be self powered. Take the basic Luxeon LED, remove the LED chip, and replace it with U235. As an added bouns, if you filled the lens cavity with Tritium, it would also light up quite bright.

All the gamma rays you want, only problem I see is, you can't turn it off.................................

are u screwing around lambda or r u serious? and, what is the Half-life of U235???
smile.gif

The half life is beyond our life time, but I don't remember the exact number, maybe 12,000 years?

Seriously, why the interest in gamma rays? Looking to make the 'Hulk'?

There are most likely better gamma emitters than U235, I just used it as an example because it's what you'd call "weapons grade" if pure enough. Not stuff available to the general public.

Gamma rays are very deadly, they penitrate deep and mutate DNA, etc. thus the Hulk....

Becareful what you seek young grasshopper,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Lambda, i just realized it wouldn't meet the criteria of being a " Light Emitting --->Diode<----" because it doesn't use a foreign electron source to create it's photons, and it isn't forward biased(of course not). It wouldn't be a diode. And I am interested in a GRED because.......hmmmmm.......reasons unknown. I guess I'm just a weirdo.

Mr. Quckbeam, true to his name, was quick to point out what was wrong with my phaser but was too abrubt in detailing how to fix it. To simply say take out the old and replace with new was fine for him but this new ARC phaser model leaves me perplexed.

Sometime, somewhere I read a theory about gravity in which this force is an ultra low electromagnetic wave. I think it would be more intersting to find ultralow frequencies than those lethal destructive ultrahigh, may be this way we could make a "repulsorgrip". Well, just was dreaming about speederbikes....

I think that the elementary particle gravity is composed of might be similiar to bohr magnetons.

gravity is almost the same as magnetism, excpet that it's affectance is not limited to only certain types of metals, and other differences. where did you read about gravity being an EMW barbarin? I would like to read it too so I may learn more.
