I will be in Japan close to Kobe next month. Any place to shop for lights or anything recommended to see or do?

Say hello to Maguma Taishi for me, translates to Ambassador Magma I believe and he lived in a volcano. Actually in the states, the show was called The Space Giants and there was a character much like Ultraman but he was called Goldar in the English translation and he is kind of like the beginning of the whole Transformer Toy and character family.

Make sure to try some fresh Mochi, a dumpling of sorts made from pounded rice mixed with rice flour and they are usually stuffed with sweet pastes but I love them plain and sauted in olive oil with an egg on top. From what I know, Japan is an eaters paradise and I am sure that you'll find a flashlight or two along the way. Have always wanted to go to Japan, I wish I had some actual hardcore knowledge for you but have a great time just the same.

I found a little shop in one of the famous shopping alleys in Koube a couple years ago that had lots of Surefires and others, but the best I could think of to tell you how to find it would be to ask locally about it using the description I just gave.

You have to try Tonkatsu, Okonomiyaki and Oyakodon, plus whatever else strikes your fancy. These dishes are very easy to get hooked on even with a completely western palate!
Do they have Eneloops in sizes other than AA and AAA there?
They have C/D adaptor bodies available at Bic Camera, Sakuraya, Yodobashi Camera and many, many others.

I went to Hiroshima for a Volleyball camp a couple of years ago, the Okonomiyaki was AMAZING! Have a fun time!

Tokyu Hands! :twothumbs
Best, self proclaimed d.i.y. headquarters, they have pretty much anything you can think of over 7 floors.

Akihabara (or locally known as Akiba) is in Tokyo, so it's a pity for the OP.
It is THE place for electronic and electrical goods. Some new items are sold there to test the market before selling them en masse in Japan and overseas. It is also a popular place for otakus (fans of manga, anime, toys, video games etc) to get their wants.

if your on a budget i dont recommend any kind of shopping LOL.

ive been to japan 3 times, its an amazing country, filled with amazing people. prepare to enter the "twilight zone" its truely a very different modern style society.

hope you enjoy the experience, and have a great time!

Becoming a Japanese food thread. :D
Not that there's anything wrong with that.
When someone talks about going over there I just naturally want to tell them some of the great things to try, since I won't be able to for a few months still!

Good call there! Lots of them around too, but I usually go to the one in Shinjuku. No matter, he'll be 300 miles away!
You guys are making me hungry...

I hear Akihabara is the place to go...
That was the intent! Akihabara has some decent places to eat, but is pretty over-run with foreigners and surly employees. Unless it's something special I like going to Yuurakucho or Kawasaki. They both have gigantic new Bic Camera stores and less foreigners and a much more relaxed atmosphere. (The only bad thing about places that have lots of foreigners is they tend to have less patient employees)

Again, it's great for parts and gadgets that wouldn't be available at a regular electronics goods store, but with Yuurakuchou just a couple stations away on the Yamanote, and Kawasaki just down the Keihin-Touhoku it's a much more enjoyable shopping experience to avoid Akihabara; except for you otaku!

You don't have to actually buy anything!

They have real C and D cells too, but expensive.
+1 on the Eneloopy.:twothumbs
It's not that great, It shows low battery at 1.27 volts and fully charged at 1.32 (or something, I wrote it in another thread here and is too lazy to check it now), atleast mine does. Very expensive too.

This will be my second trip. My favorite "food" so far is Asahi.
I will look for the Eneloopy. I had not heard of them before.
I plan to bring my AA2 Quark turbo and I think my D10. Also charger and Eneloops.
Kind of funny on my first trip I bought a Inova microlight.
Thanks for the suggestions.

I know you said Kobe but just in case you are going to be in Tokyo I can let you know of a couple of stores.

TokyuHands usually stock a small range of SureFires but they are more expensive than in the US. They also usually have some bicycle lights as well. Not a huge collection.

Biccamera has an interesting range of lights, mostly the ones created by http://www.saint-gentleman.co.jp/ so you'll probably find a few not available in the US but they are not that impressive for a CPF'er, still fun to explore.

There is one shop in Akihabara that carries SureFires, Mag's and some original (mostly crappy) chinese lights and others .

The most serious walk-in place Ive found is in AmeYoko Market (near Ueno, Tokyo) called Malugo.
Although the shop is small, they have a very large and unique stock of lights including peaks, polarions and some you wont find on CPF.

let me know if you need links/details.

I'd appreciate the details on the shop in Ueno.

Go to the main exit (中央口-Chuo) past the Hard Rock Cafe and cross the street, go right along the sidewalk and you'll see the entrance to Ameyoko to your left. There are scores of shops, some indoors as well as all along the walking street.
