I don't have any super powered flashlights like some of you but I would say the beam brightness of the Surge at the center compares to my Surefire 8AX which is rated at 110 Lumens I believe. It's a bit blotchy and not as smooth as the Surefire but doesn't really have rings and is quite usable, particularly considering the price is five times less then my Surefire 8AX. Would prefer a regular push button switch rather then the slide switch of the Surge but a minor difference to me.

I'm thinking of using it as my car light and I have a question considering cold weather usage. I know alkalines are not supposed to perform as well as lithiums in cold weather but to what extent is the difference? If I were to use the light filled with alkaline's on a zero F degree day, would it be dead or merely just not as bright? This is important to me as I definitely will encounter zero degree or colder weather here in the northeast US.

I tested some LithiumAAs in one of my StealthLites and compared them to standard Alks (I believe it was either UltraAAs or EnergizerAAs like it's certified with)

Any rate, there was a noticable difference in brightness at about -20C.

What -20C is in F, I have no idea...
I'd have to look up in an old text book that still had F temperature conversions since the last few decades have seen a move to Metric and Decimal and the Imperial is long gone.

I've not since used LithiumAAs in my StealthLites for fear of overpowering the bulb and having one fail. However, they are now sold in a few shops so if people's experiences of them have changed, I may switch to LithiumAAs.

Personally, I would talk to Princeton Tec about whether I could use LithiumAAs in my Surge Flashlight, but as I don't [yet] have one, it's not a pressing issue although I am still interested.

-20C is -4F. See here.
http://www.sciencemadesimple.net/temperature.html I've seen considerably colder weather but I make it a habit not to be out in it anymore.

I'm afraid to put lithiums in my incadescents after my streamlight polypro 4AA bulb blew after maybe two hours of usage with lithiums. Perhaps I'll put the vernable E1 in the car, afterall the light would only be used in emergencys. Or perhaps when the Arc LS arrives, I'll relegate the Turtle lite II to that duty. So many choices, still not nearly enough lights.

Geepondy,

Do not put Lithium AA's in your Surge! See thread "Can lithiums really RUIN P Tec Surge?"
