Hi Guys,

How do you make sense of all this "alpha," "select," "grade A/B," gen 2+, etc. nomenclature? How does it relate to milspec?

I am looking at getting a monocular for use in all weather and possibly mounted on a rifle.

Can some of you guys please explain what is what?

The Grade Alpha or Select Grade Alpha or Select Alpha Grade B all refer to the quality of the image. Select Alpha will produce the highest quality images without many artifacts or other disturbances in the image. For a little less money, the Select Alpha Grade B will give you the overall quality produced from a Select Alpah tube, but you will have some artifacts in the produced image. As for Gen 2+, this is about as close to Gen 3 as you can get, but at a reduced price. IMO, the images produced by Gen 3 are far superior to anything you will find in Gen 2 or Gen 2+. However, it depends on your usage. I personally have a PVS-14 Select Alpha Gen 3 system and I love it. It is handheld, lightweight, helmet mountable and weapons mountable (with optional mount). Would a Gen 2+ suit my usage, yes it would... but at the time I acquired one the difference in quality of images sold me on the Gen 3.

I think the best question is what would your budget and quality requirements be. Go with a MINI-14 or PVS-14 for the lightest weight and best performance. Both have weapons mount options and will provide good weather resistance.

We are currently adding Night Vision to our store selection and have access to all of these products. Many of them are already online, but I can assist you further and provide you with some images through different models, just send me an email.

Steven,

Is there a good headmount option that doesn't require a helmet? I have a Gen III that I would love to use head mounted but I don't want to look like I'm, you know, at war

Thanks, Steven.

It is tempting to jump the gun and get something sub-gen III. My original plan was to hold out and get a PVS-14 though.

CM,

There is a good head mount option, it looks a lot like "Splinter Cell" but is the best option.

Check it out here: http://www.tacticalsupply.com/catalog/134/tactical-scopes-sights.php

It is the night vision categories Icon and also the icon for goggles. They generally run around $120-$150 and $75-$80 for the adapter. These come with the new units that I sell though and a few more accessories as well. Let me know if I can help you out with one.

beezaur - you have two options. One is to go for something that is cost effective and gets you into it for now. You can always sell that unit when you get ready to upgrade.... or it may suit your needs and you decide to keep it.

The other is to wait and get a higher grade unit. It is a tough call, but if you get something now you'll have a better feel for what it is like and what you will want if you decide to upgrade.

Either way, I'll help you out as much as possible when you are ready.
