Have a question about L2 and body

Is it possible to run malkoffs MCE with 1 18650? Can I buy the L2 extenion peice and run it off 2 18650s?

I believe the voltage will be too low with 1 x 18650, as 6-12V is what I remember Gene telling me. That means either 3 x 18500 or 2x18650.
