Just found that the anti-reflective coating on my HDS Rotary is completely cracked on the outside of the sapphire glass.
The light is new, I received it 11/14/2020.

No worries. Just send Henry an email explaining the issue. Amazing customer service is part of the reason you paid more.

Already sent an email.
I was honestly surprised by this, the main reason why I chose sapphire glass is, that it is more scratch resistant.

Weird. Let us know what he says. I have a rotary with sapphire I received about the same time with the same thing appearing. But the glass lens on my 6 y/o executive hasn’t a scratch on it. Really bizarre! 6 y/o has been through it all but my new rotary has been in “quarantine” since it left Henry’s possession.

Edit - on closer inspection I think the AR coating on my glass lens is just fully scratched off on the outside. I can still see some purple hue around the edges but it’s all gone towards the center. Probably not a cause for concern. Still curious what he says though.

The glass (sapphire) is fine, the anti-reflective coating has a lot of microcracks over the entire surface.

I agree, but what is the point in this coating when it is so easily scratched?

I'm not trying to be funny here, but it reduces reflections.

Most are pretty prone to scratching and cracking.

The effect for a flashlight is minimal, by eye.

There are hardcoat and scratch resistant versions, but those are rather expensive (see Swarovski optics, for example) .... probably not "worth" it for a torch, for the vast majority of purposes.

I'm guessing that the sapphire lens source may supply the coating as "stock"

I'd look at it as an extra. If you care about the AR properties, you may want or need to protect it, such as with a clear lens cap. Like with fine optics

A lot of watch crystals come with AR, you can usually choose if you want the AR coating on both inside & outside or only inside. Many watch owners rub off the outer AR coating because it is so prone to scratching/cracking. Having only the inner AR coating is enough, having it on both sides only brings very marginal AR properties.

Read somewhere on Henry's site that the majority of photons pass through the edge of the lens and not the center, so even if the center is marred in some fashion, it will not significantly affect the amount of light coming out the front.

It may be a simple matter of pointing the flashlight away from you and turning it on. If you can't see the scratches, then don't worry about it.
