I have two Rotaries, one about two-years old and one about a year old, and they both perform similarly in that they stiffen up in certain situations.

The viscosity of the lube goes high with low temperatures making it feel stiff. Feels like about -30 deg Celsius here today. Will make anything mechanical hard to use even before you get the gloves on. This is one reason I lean towards the clicky (and with raised switch) at the moment.

got this email from a friend;

" How are you liking the HDS? I have a rotary and after spending about an hour and a half with it, I can't for the life of me figure out how to program it ;) "

is it really that tough to program it?.
thanks.

My first experience programing my new clicky was not pretty. It took a while to figure out the time spacing between clicks and a longer time to remember what click sequences did what.
After a couple painful sessions, everything suddenly fell into place, made sense and I now enjoy changing the programming around and experimenting.
One thing helped. I now keep my HDS light in "enable customization" mode. It was a pain to take apart the light and do the 20 click thing just so I could program it.

I picked up how to program my first HDS, an EDC 140T, right away. I can't say how different the rotary programming is though because I haven't looked into it.

I think the HDS customization was easy for me only because I've programmed Armytek Predator lights which are definitely difficult to program :/

Has anybody here had any problem with sand or dust going into the rotary knob? How much should I be worried about it?

There will be videos soon on the HDS website going through every step of programming for both the executive and rotary. They are getting made Tuesday and will hopefully be up and linked within a week.

The Rotary can be operated just like a Clicky, so it's the best of both worlds.

I found that when I carry my rotary, the knob doesn't get stiff because my body heat keeps it at a good operating temperature. I carry my rotary using a suspension clip, so it's not exposed much to any cold that I might be in. I have noticed that the tail/knob does get stiff when the light is colder; like sometimes when it has been sitting in my bag.

If you remember Henry's history of spelunking you'll find it easier to understand that we're unlikely to see those types of outputs any day soon and if he were to consider such a thing it would be more likely to see burst in the range that you were hoping to see sustained levels.

Right now I think we're blest to see a 250 from him, and while in no way see anything wrong with wishful thinking, I'd predict that dreams of 1000lm (you may as well call 960 a 1000) will for the foreseeable future, remain just that, dreams.
.
Well,it depends on ones idea of 'foreseeable future'. While Henry has a history of spelunking, mine is in LE. While I don't see a raging battle in the lumen war with HDS at the forefront, an 800 lumen 18650 tactical rotary is not out of the question... Don't ask for a timeline but it is being considered as a viable option.

Ok this sounds interesting !
(I have a dream - 1" through the waist, and a bit bigger at the ends, a normal HDS scaled up a bit to hold a 18650, and add a bit of mass for heat sinking (and a bigger reflector) a nice throwy beam with good spill) just glad it's not being released now, I have time to save :)

Ok....my new wish list item number one: Titanium 800 lumen 18650 Tactical Rotary!

Hello. I am new to the forum and this is my first post.

I purchased a High CRI clicky from Henry-HDS last year and received the flashlight in the same year.

I was on the HDS site tonight to order a second High CRI and noticed there was no link for it anymore. I have read the past 5 or 6 pages in this thread and come to the conclusion that the High CRI is no longer being produced. I don't know much about LED's or what one is used in the one I have, but I can say that I absolutely love the "color" of it. I carry the light with me daily and often use it at work (I work for a pop design firm).

Well, I am disappointed to say the least. I really wanted to get another light, hell maybe 2 more just incase I lose one or it breaks.

IT seems like Henry has a neutral 170 lum light coming out to "replace" it, but I am concerned it will be too cool for me.

Also...I would like to mirror some the responses in this thread about a titanium HDS....I would buy one in a heartbeat

Raygun, the High CRI emitter you currently own won't be available from HDS any more due to a lack of emitter availability. They do come up for sale quite often in the CPF Marketplace.

I can't speak to the tint of the new Nichia 219B emitter that Henry is using in the current "neutral" offering until mine arrives within the next week, but it's very rare for the Nichia 219A (with same tint as the B version, as I'm reading) to be called cool by anyone besides hardcore warm tint fans. Once my 219B arrives, I will be comparing it directly with my four other 219A-equipped lights.

Roger. Thank you. I will most likely order the new one. I do trust Henry to make a solid design, it's just scary heading out to uncharted waters. Sometimes, a product comes along that you feel is perfect and cant imagine how it could be made better. This is how I feel out my HDS High CRI.

EDIT: I take it this is the light I should be looking at?

I was just thinking the other day how nice it would be to have my rotary with an 18650, more lumens would be nice but in all honesty I would like a neutral xpg 2 led. Oh and a pocket clip.
