Something like this...

Just what I was thinking about a few days ago! I am going to give it a real testing in my Go bag. If it holds up I will order another...maybe for a UV light :grin2:

Life is good when you have Thors Custom Leather HDS holsters on your desk :D. Both are custom made horizontal carry. The top one is belt loop, the bottom one is belt clip with a battery compartment strap.

Today, I sold the new and unused holster on the top of the photo. It was a belt loop attachment and I learned I really like belt clips. Now I only have six THCL holsters and one soon to be delivered THCL Go Bag travel pouch. I will think about a new and different horizontal flashlight retention design in the next month or so and maybe replace the one I sold.

It just needed a border.

So, here is the HDS Pouch. Something to toss the light in so it doesn't get those nasty nasty dings and scratches. I lined it with buckskin so that my brass or bronze can go in it. Made it strictly for flush tail HDS lights. Kind of a travel case I guess.

Oh my now this I like a lot!! And love that color.

Not a holster but I thought I would give a headlamp a try. Will be testing this evening hunting rattlers...
2 inch wide soft suede and the holster section is SNUG and lined with suede as well. Can easily adjust the Rotary and the head will not move. Little bit of 2 inch wide elastic on the back to keep it snug.

Been there, done that with the Thors Custom Leather Downward Draw holster you made. Clips right to the ball cap for use as a headlight.

I am sure some minor mods could be made to further improve the design if one wanted a dedicated HDS headlamp holster. I probably would shorten the clip and attach it 1 inch further down the holster tube, use a thinner leather, eliminate the bezel stop, have the bezel stick 1/2 inch outside the front of the holster, and use a battery compartment strap to keep the light in place and secure. Should be a nice, compact, and lightweight winner.

It is the kind of holster every HDS owner should want to have in their Go/BOB (Bug Out Bag) Bag in case they had a vehicle flat at night on the side of the road. You need two hands to get the jack set and change a tire.

haha how funny, I hadn't seen this post yet and I used the holster I got off of you exactly the same way last night working around the yard. I thought I had made some kind of miraculaous discovery.

I am on the lookout for a holster. I want to carry my HDS rotary in a holster that allows me to sit comfortably while wearing it on my belt. Just the light, no batteries.

What are the advantages of a canted setup? Does Kydex hold stuff as securely as leather? Is sideways or vertical more sit friendly?

Thanks!

For me:

It depends on where you are sitting - chair in business or restaurant or seat in a car or truck.

For a chair in business or restaurant your legs and torso are at about a 90 degree angle. Either the canted or horizontal works best.

For a seat in a car or truck your legs and torso are at less than a 90 degree angle. The horizontal holster works best.

The canted and horizontal set-up allows me to draw the light in a way that I can put it into action right away. A vertical holster requires me to manipulate the light in my hand before I can put it into action. Kydex holds the light very well but I found it very utilitarian and not as compact a footprint as some of my Thors Hammer Leather holsters.

My favorites in order are leather Horizontal first and leather canted second. Thors Hammer has an incredible horizontal holster with a battery compartment flap. A picture of mine is posted in the "if you could only have one HDS light" thread.

Wow, what a reply. Thanks so much for taking the time to write that. I'm mostly in an office type chair all day, so horizontal may be best for me. It's not that I need it at a moment's notice, it's that I need to carry it on me at all times and not clash with the knife in my right side pocket.

I'll definitely take a look at your post and will reach out to Hogo when the time is right.

Have a good weekend and Columbus Day :)

Dan, at Thors Custom Leather Holster made a new very compact horizontal build for me today - born October 5, 2018. You may want to contact him sooner than later to see that build. He makes so many things that over time he may not remember how he made that horizontal build...

The other benefit that a horizontal holster has is that it does not block access to your pockets.

I barely remember what I made last week! Any type of new design takes awhile for me to get programmed in my 286 computer brain. The hard drive is full and my flash memory just means I remember something for under a second.

This has the main compartment lined with very thin pigskin so that the back of the snap will not scratch the light.

looks much more compact over the original version.

I'm starting to think horizontal would have been more preferred. I only have vertical and I know that at times it bugs me as it will get in your side in certain situations. Horizontal should always be out of the way. a slim in pocket design might be another good option but I wouldn't want it to be a clipped version as it would block access to the pocket. Pocket slip might be ok and easy enough to get to.

definitely nice to have all the options

I sat in a tree stand for 6 hours this past weekend with my horizontal carry and never even knew it was there. Did exactly what I needed it to do

My double HDS pocket slip has been in my front left pocket every day since I got it four or five months ago. It's surprisingly unobtrusive. Then again, I never really understood why some folks are hyper sensitive to the weight of edc gear.

If anyone is even thinking about a custom compact horizontal carry HDS holster, order it now.

Both of my compact horizontal holsters are leaving Dan's shop tomorrow. If you want the same awesome build get it while the build specs are fresh in Dan's mind. Each holster he makes is custom and it took me about three try's to get the best of the best compact design for me. None of this stuff is written down. There is no mold. There is only Dan's memory and he builds a lot of non-HDS custom stuff daily. I had to send him one of the custom HDS holsters he built for me a few months ago (Post #242 holster on the bottom) to serve as a model a for a new compact holster (Post #255). So if you are even thinking you may want one within the year, get it now.

Post #242 on the bottom is the horizontal battery compartment strap version.
Post #255 is the horizontal flap version

I am assuming you are comparing holsters in posts #250 and #255. The holster in post #250 is fully lined and has a 12 stitch long flashlight compartment. The holster in post #255 is only partially lined with a thinner lining and has a shorter 10 stitch long flashlight compartment. Both are awesome holsters and I had a very, very, very difficult time parting with the holster in post #250 (it sold within a few hours of posting). I wanted an even more compact holster and the only way to accomplish that was to partially line the holster with Pigskin. So that is what Dan did. I also wanted a shorter flashlight tube because I have huge fingers and a shorter tube allows me to more easily and quickly access the light.

So, the fully lined holster in post #250 can be used with copper based HDS flashlights like the bronze and brass runs. The partially lined holster in post #255 cannot be used with copper based HDS flashlights. It was a trade-off I made.
