Hi everyone...
I had a small Victorinox for years, a "standard model" ... I think I've lost it, so I want to buy another one... I don't need strange tools or big knife... This is just something I carry with me going on holiday, camping, outdoor.. I have no other requests, just a small knife. But I want a quite robust one.. I will use it rarely but I don't want it to break when I'll need it...
I was thinking about it, soldier model http://www.victorinox.ch/index.cfm?site=victorinox.ch&page=234&lang=E
Or maybe a bigger one, with locking blade of 111mm? Like Nomad or Trailmaster? Still unsure...
But I'm quite confused... There are knives in the "Pioneer Range" that are in the PDF catalog but not in the website.. Then I can find this, not in the pdf neither on the website but here: http://www.coltelleriacollini.it/cgi-bin/coltelleriacollini.storefront/IT/Product/2413
I read official swiss army knife will be changed, but maybe that older model is just great for my needs... Those in the Pioneer Range seems to be similar... have they the same structure with added functions ?? I was mainly thinking to the lanyard hole... Soldier knife doesn't have anything similar... But I'm thinking that if it was designed for a soldier, it MUST be ok also for me...
I think that classic red ones are less robust...
Please help me deciding.. This kind of stuff is rarely changed, so it's a pity to make a bad decision :) Sorry for my english, i'm italian :)

The very best way to determine what you may want is to see if you can hold one in your hands. There really is no 100% sure way to see if the knife suits you personally unless you hold it.

I find for myself, the 84mm knives are the perfect size for pocket carry, but I like the extra length and available combinations provided by the 91mm knives.

I currently have 5 knives with a 6th one coming in the mail....I still haven't found what I consider to be the perfect knife for me.

I do plan on acquiring a Soldier at some point.

You may already know, but a "Pioneer" model is the same as the "Soldier" model, except the "Pioneer" has a key/lanyard ring on it.

Otherwise they are the same knife.

Another model that you might consider for camping and outdoors, is a "Farmer", which is a "Pioneer" with a saw blade added.

It is a VERY handy pocket knife for outdoors use in my opinion.

You just said OUTDOOR, which says to me FARMER. I am not out in the wild every day but I do carry my Farmer every day. I would carry a Soldier but they do not come in red. Plus, the saw is useful for when I am out in the wild.

Thanks to everyone...
At the end, I decided for the Soldier... Seems to be something simple and robust...
I wrote about the lanyard but then I remembered that honestly I never used it...
I wrote outdoor but maybe isn't the correct English word...I'm not meaning "heavy outdoor"...
If one day I will do "real outdoor" I will buy a "REAL" knife and adequate tools :D
Until now I've never needed a saw :)
This is just 91 mm , maybe saw and other stuff are more useful in a bigger knife...
Soldier is also quite cheap compared to other knives...

I ended up carrying two knives. a small swiss army knife with tweezers nail file toothpick and scissors and a second knife that has 3 blades I like. If I could have a custom made knife with 3 blades and the other features I would carry one but IMO swiss army knife blade options are limited so much I consider them less of a serious knife and more of a multi toolkit.

I thought to Soldier, but I ended up receiving a Pioneer (at least I think it's a Pioneer, it's almost equal to Soldier but with keyring).
Well, I was undecided about key-ring , someone else decided for me, good!

It seems to be a quite sturdy small knife...

Obviously, there are bigger, sturdier, nicer knives, but for now I don't need them...

Thanks to everyone

If you decide you hate the keyring, 30 seconds with a Dremel will quickly take it off, and your Pioneer instantly becomes a Soldier model.
