I hate being such a dummy, but I was truly amazed at how far flashlights have advanced since I bought my last cheap plastic model several years ago. To be candid I am sick and tired of lousy flashlights that never work or illuminate worth a darn so I am turning to you pros for some much needed help in recommending a quality flash light for home use, and to carry in the car for emergencies situations. Size is not a problem as I don't intend to carry it on my person. Ease of use and relaibilty is a must. I do want a LED that puts out a lot of light and I don't want to spend over $50. TIA

I would recommend the Streamlight 7 LED 4AA - it can be found for about $30 and is brighter than a 1W Luxeon Star or so I've heard. Welcome to CPF!

Dan

I think you are mistaken, the Streamlight 7 LED uses 7x5mm LEDs which have a max light output of 9cd, approx 65cd

If they are brighter than that, they are overdriven

The Luxeon based lights are *FAR* brighter than that, approx 220-230cd

Welcome to the cpf and all the info that you will ever need can be found here. It appears as though this is your first post so have a good time and get your credit card ready to take a beating.

diddle,
Is that $50 each or $50 for both? For the car ememergency light, something with a lithium battery would work well. It will light up when you need it. One of those Inretech Luxeon drop-ins with two lithiums in a Brinkmann Legend 2AA light would work well. You could use a minimag, but the Brinkmann is better due to it's locking tailcap so it won't turn accidently on. The drop-in cost $25, add in shipping and throw in a Brinkmann and you are in the low $40's. The other option is the Streamlight 3AA ($35) or Elektrolumens 3AA Illumilux ($30)
A home use light to me means D cell batteries, something with a long run time, waterproof, hard to destroy and have regulated brightness. For the budget of $50, there is only one that I know of: Elektrolumens Anglelux 2D. I have one and it works well (my 10-year-old son goes camping with it all the time) over 24 hours of even voltage regulated brightness and 5 to 10 days of gradually dimmer output. It will stand on end and has a great belt or vest clip for hands free operation (also good to clip to a cord for area lighting) The Anglelux is perfect for the home emergency light and excells in camping duty.
If you buy an Illumilux and Anglelux together, you will have about $15 left over from your budget...almost enough for an Arc AAA keychain light or... After you buy those two lights, protect your wallet and don't look at CPF again...
/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hahaha.gif I started with a Minimag/Badboy 500mA regulated Luxeon LED light last fall.... now, I have 8 LED lights and counting.
Welcome to the CPF!

The SL 4AA 7LED is overdriven and very bright.
BUT, it is NOT brighter than a good 1W LS.
My Arc LS stomps it.

The SL 4AA would still be a nice choice though, great runtime, and a nice light for the price.
Other lights in your price range you might want to look at, are the SL Task Lights.
