I am dreaming about my first flashlight mod/build, and I need help.

I have a SureFire L2 for which I would like to assemble an incandescent head.

The reason for this, other than the inherent pleasure of such a project, is to have a "throw head" to complement the L2's flood head while taking advantage of the L2's regulation circuitry.

I do not want to spend so much on this that it would be better advised to purchase a second light. To accomplish this I am willing to forgo bombproof construction and aesthetics as needed.

An example of what I would like to achieve is the Streamlight Strion, which yields over 7000 lux @ 1m in a smooth beam, from a 6.12w bulb with a small reflector. Though the operating voltage of this bulb is not compatible with the L2, I think the operating power is.

A G2 head on an E2C sould fit mechanically, but even if the bulb were compatible, it would not produce the throw I desire.

I need help in at least two areas. The first is the identification of bulbs that are compatible with the L2's regulation electronics. The second is identifying a head and reflector that will produce the results I want.

I turn this over to the combined wisdom of the CPF mod doctors. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

The level of silence suggests to me I may be stepping on toes without realizing it.

Is this the wrong forum, or is this kind of request for help unwelcome from a newbie perhaps?

Perhaps you're treading where none of us have gone before? I am aware of only one guy who tried his MN03 in an E2e bezel on the L2's electronics, which are specifically designed for LED (constant-current) as opposed to incandescent. We have no idea how well this will work, or whether it will work at all.

Besides, if the G2/P60's throw is insufficient for you, there may not be anything at all in this size class that will do it.

I'm not saying it can't be done, but rather, not with what little I know. You may be best served with a little experimentation since this is completely unexplored territory. If you do find a solution, there might be quite a lot of interested L2 owners..

Thanks Kevin. I feel better now than when thinking it was simply such a stupid question that nobody wanted to waste time on it.

If this really is unexplored territory, then I retract the requirement that it throw farther than the G2, because any working, regulated result would count as a success. I still think performance on par with the SL Strion would be theoretically achievable, if my fallible assumptions are correct.

Is the power efficiency of the L2 driver known?

Would anyone care to contribute an E compatible head, with or without bulb, to my project? I shall return it when I determine if this is worth developing.

Kevin, thank you for the reference page. It's a shame he didn't take it farther, but that leaves room for someone else. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/naughty.gif

I would like to be that someone, but don't hold your breath folks, what spending cash I have is headed elsewhere. This won't keep me from dabbling a bit, but a complete solution isn't on the docket.
