I am kind of a newbie and need your input. Can you give me some ideas on what or how I could/should upgrade my new Surefire M3-CB? Maybe an LED backup head? Maybe a brighter Incan drop-in? Maybe a better battery set-up for longer life and brighter beam?

I want to EDC, as well as use it with my Glock .40 sidearm using the Surefire/Rogers technique.

Any suggestions/opinions would be most appreciated!

The KL6 head is Surefires LED head, however is pricey, but is a direct replacement.
You can order the KT4 turbo head and use different high output bulbs OR an Arcmania LED module.
The standard M3 head is pretty limited on upgrades other than bulbs.

You can use two of AW's 17500 rechargeable batteries in the M3 without any modification.

First thing I would buy would be some of AW's protected 17500 cells and a charger. This way you play for free, and pick up a few more lumens in the process.

An LED would be a good choice for a reliable, increased runtime set-up. Both the KL3 and KL5 are very popular for the M3. I have an L5 which has the KL5 head, and love the beam and output...you would get between 130-150 lumens with a pair of 17500's with that head.

Also, being that you have the standard bezel, upgrading to a turbohead would be a great idea as long as size isn't your #1 concern. Along with that, comes many other options that we can discuss if you are intersted in a TH set-up.

The KL3 & KL5 heads WILL NOT WORK ON THE M3 BODY. Only the KL6.

S#$t!! You are correct, I don't know how I got that one mixed up! Too many things going through my head at once :banghead:

Thanks for the ideas... keep 'em coming. I DO NOT want to put a turbohead on at this point, because of size. However, I am interested in:
1. Incan bulbs that will be brighter
2. LED heads that will both work with this light and be more than 100 lumens.
3. Higher power batteries -- both standard and rechargable.
4. A holster that can be unattached WITHOUT removing my belt and is HORIZONTAL.

Thanks everyone for responding!

Go with either the excelent KL6 module or wait for the upcoming Lumens Factory M series bulbs to be released.

Milkyspit can mod a KL2 head for you that will put out far more than 100 lumens. The KL6 head & Turbo heads are really the only options that I know of. The Arcmania turbohead LED module puts out more the 100 lumens. IF you want very high output, the turbo head or a modded head (KT4, KL6 or KL2) is what you will need. Bulbs are expensive and burn out, LEDs are expensive but don't need replacement, Modded heads are expensive but seem to be the best option. I plan on modding a turbohead with 3 emitters and a custom reflector(s). I don't like pricey incandecents that burn out and the single LED is NICE but, I just want that extra punch.

ideally, bore to accept 18mm cells, run a pair of 18500s and a MN11...

probably void warranty and reduce body integrity, but it would be bright and rechargable...

Some other options - add a 1-cell extender to either: (1) run the M4 lamp assemblies - up to 350 lumens - on four CR123 primaries - [edit: This would also require the "turbohead"]; or (2) run the M3 lamp assemblies from two 17670 li-ion rechargeables. It is a little bit front heavy using rogers or harries hold with a 4 cell light...but it can work with practice.

Do what I'm going to do:

Purchase a 2x18650 Leef body (www.lighthound.com has them) and a LeefGrip (I love them) and a LeefRing (you want to attach a lanyard to that expensive toy, right?). Purchase a set of AW's latest 18650 cells and charger. Now you can run hi cap lion rechargeables with the 225 lumen bulbs. Free lumens!

Just leave it alone an use it the way Surefire designed it. You start jacking around with mods and you just invite trouble and unreliability. Surefire designed it that way for a reason. If you want more power, buy a bigger light. If you want an LED, then buy an LED. You have one of the finest incan lights on the market. Don't screw it up with a bunch of "cool" stuff, that really isn't.

Try www.blade-tech.com for great kydex holsters that fit your needs.

Gordov, I just got the same light a few weeks ago. While it is a very nice light, I guess I just expected more output. I'm using the HOLA and it is bright but when I shined it into a car parked in front of my house the other night, I was expecting a little more light. My first thought was to either get a brighter light or start messing with the M3. I had to sit back and really think about what I wanted to use the light for, which is mainly indoors as a back-up to a weapon mounted light (2 is 1, 1 is none) and not necessarily as an outdoor thrower. Therefore, it already fits my needs and I don't think I'll be modifying it, although I am going to throw new batteries in it and see if that makes a difference. When I did shine it, I was able to light up the front seat of the car, which was about 10-15m away, I guess I just thought 225 lumens would REALLY light it up a lot. Again, maybe low batteries are having an affect. Anyway, my point is, what are you going to use it for? You've thrown a few possible mods out for suggestions, but it really boils down to the expected use. If you are going to use it everyday, then rechargeability is the answer, if you want longer run-times, then LED may be the answer, if you want brightness, then a HOLA incan, etc.

For me, I want brightness, don't care (that much) about run-time, and I won't be using it everyday, or even every month (except I have been since it is my new toy) so I'm sticking with the "stock" HOLA set-up with 123s. Now I'm looking at possible mods to my maglight for that "daylight in a tube" effect. I may also consider "playing around" with my new G3 and throwing an extender and a turbo head, but the G3 is also about 25% of the cost of the M3 and will not likely be used in a life-and-death situation like the M3 might be called upon to, therefore I won't mind messing with it a little.

I also have a M3CB. I am looking into some rechargeables. I understand that most rechargeable come in 16, 17, or 18mm diameters. I hear two batteries models being thrown around quite a bit for the 3 cell bodies and that is 17500 and 18500. MDOCOD was kind enough to clear up that the 18500 is the 18mmdia size, but what size is the 17500? Is it the stock CR123 (16mm size) or is the 17500 a 17mm dia size? And what is the largest dia battery you can fit in the SureFire bodies (C, D, M) without boring it out? I have heard that the 17mm will fit, but will be snug. If that is the case to maximize I would think I would need 17mm dia reachargeable batteries. Any recommendations?

Gordov2 - As far as the LED upgrade, I have a KL5 hooked to a C2, and a KL6 enroute which will go on a M4 body. I am very happy with the C2/KL5 combo, and think you would be happy with the M3/KL6 combo if you went that route. Good luck.

I've got both the regular M3 and the M3T, I can't tell you enough how great the TH's are! My standard M3 with hola is bright but the M3T with hola is amazing! The reach is phenomenal while still allowing close in use as well, I'm going to run some rechargables in mine and call it good, as far as I'm concerned for my needs I've found incandescant perfection

Thanks for all the replies. I really want to use it for everyday carry with the MN-11 (225 lumen) bulb. Though 20 minutes is just not enough runtime. I've been told that LI ion rechargeable are unusable for the MN-11 (225-lumen) bulb though. I would definitely like longer runtimes, with a potentially brighter bulb than the MN-11, with the ability to use Li Ion rechargeables. Also, I really want a good light holster for this unit. One that is inconspicuous. Maybe a horizontal? Any suggestions??

:huh2: 2 AW protected 17500's should work just fine with either bulb....at least that is what I thought? Anyone else chime in on this?

I used 2x17500's with my KT2 turbohead, in which I was using the M3T LA's. Both the MN15 and MN16 worked just fine, although I had to double-click to power-up the MN16 once the cells were discharged a bit. If the 17500's worked for those LA's, I would think they would be just fine for your MN10 and MN11 LA's....
