I am revamping an old headlamp for an upcoming camping trip. I am replacing the lux III emitter in the spotlight portion of the light. I am torn between a q2 5a or one of the high CRI (91?) seouls. What do you guys recommend for outdoor usage?

however the seoul might have a better beam pattern in the reflector.

This is about the characteristics of different emitters, rather than the lights that use them, so I'm moving the thread to the LED section.

Depending on the desired output, either one would make a nice replacement.

But, as you mentioned, the SSC will most likely work with the existing reflector. The Cree might, but probably won't.

One thing to consider, the SSC needs to be focused properly or you'll get tint variations.

The CRI of the SSC is nice, but the output is lacking. The Cree's have much better output, but the CRI isn't quite as high, but quite suitable for most applications. The 5A sometimes has a mauve/pink tint, I would go with a 5C or 5B.

If it was me, since presumably you'll be using batteries, I'd go with the a Cree. The higher efficiency will be beneficial to battery life, especially since you can run it at much lower current for the same output as the SSC.

The Cree CRI should be quite acceptable since the application is non-critical. If it was a reading or inspection lamp, I'd go with the SSC. But here I'm not sure the small "real world" gain would outweigh the lower efficiency. I'd rather have a lower CRI light that was working than a high CRI light with dead batteries. If you were trying to discern slight differences in flesh tones or wire traces the suggestion would probably be different.

Thanks TExLite. Since I already have a q2 5a im gonna give it a whirl first. I think your right, either would be fine and i can't justify shelling out more $ unless this one deosn't work.

dont like P4s, but they work better with Lux III focusing devices.

When using a XR-E, use something suiting to it.
