Guys, a buddy of mine asked me to buy him an HID bulb online and first he told me H11 which I got, wrong bulb. Then he told me to get an H7 which I got, wrong bulb...

Finally he's listening to me about making sure WHAT kind it is before buying one.

Well, I have no idea but I'm hoping this is perfectly clear to someone around here.

The measures of the diameters at the bottom are accurate within half a mm or so (keep in mind that it's soft rubber). He said the ORIGINAL bulb he had was SHORTER than this one which from the top of the glass to where it goes into the fitting is 45mm.

Anyone know what to get and perhaps even with a link? Remember, this guy is a cheap *******! Oh, he wants 10,000 kelvins too so that he can REALLY irritate me when I see him on the streets... 🙁

Damn, I should just get him some 3200 k's

Thanks for any help

Can we get a resize on some of those pics? Some of those are a bit large.

What make/model car is this? Is this the OEM HID, or did he put in a "kit"? (If a kit, stop helping. He's on his own; don't be an accessory to his crime.)

That he's saying H7 and H11 seems to mean that it IS a kit.

Kit I think and no, I would like nothing more than to make him go back to regular bulbs but what can you do...

What size do you want the pics? They are now 1200 pixels.

What you are showing is a bulb from an "HID kit" meant to replace 9004 or 9007 halogen bulbs. "HID kits" in halogen-bulb headlamps or fog/auxiliary lamps (any kit, any lamp, any vehicle no matter whether it's a car, truck, motorcycle, etc.) do not work safely or effectively, which is why they are illegal. See here for full details. Do not try to buy a replacement for this bulb. Get the dangerous "HID kit" out of the car and put the correct halogen bulbs back in.

Suspect there are a few HID spotlights out there that use 9004-base HID modules - or someone that wants to build a conversion. You could always sell it to someone as a spare - or performing a spotlight mod - and not feel guilty about contributing to headlight glare.

Which then would explain why he has no low and high, just one setting. Why do people bother making illegal crap? Mind you, I hate that 10k $hit anyway.

THis is good news for ME. Thanks 🙂

Nah, that'll be his headache. I'll just tell it like it is (and I'll put the blame squarely where it belongs, on yall) and tell him that the guys in the forum wouldn't tell me what to buy 'cause it's illegal 🙂

He's running regular bulbs right now because the first set we ordered for him was wrong and he needed lights for his car pronto and he decided to run them till they die first so maybe I can get him to stick to normal stuff. Here's hoping 🙂

Indeed. It baffles me that the US automakers chose such alarmingly high color temps when they started rolling out HID's. A brand-spanking new Escalade off the showroom floor looks like someone's econobox blinged out with aggravatingly blue eBay HID's (but at least the beam pattern is far better). They've got to be pushing the edges of how the DOT defines "white" for HID.

They didn't. Automotive HIDs are almost all 4100K to 4300K; a few are 5000K. They don't go higher than that. The extreme blue-violet you see is optical color fringe. Some manufacturers deliberately design it into their low beam projectors -- halogen and HID alike! -- because they think their customers think it's kewl.

Their customers DO think it's kewl. Me, I hate'em. They blind the hell outta me for nothing 🙁

You can just not help him with his plan to reduce his own safety, and the safety of those around him.

Fixed that for you. He's to blame; he's the one that wanted to put ridiculous, unsafe, ineffective, and illegal stuff on his car. 🙂

I'm seeing this in what appears to be reflector housings - perhaps not OEM after all.

EDIT - apparently they are projectors, just designed to resemble the usual reflector housings.

Anyway, I told him I can't help him so he'll either have to buy the whole kit or stick to something normal.

Thanks all

George
