I'm looking for a high quality, reasonably priced one hand opening knife with a hawkbill blade, pocketclip and thumb hole/stud. It also must be plain edge. I've had a terrible time finding anything like this that wasn't either extremely expensive (I want to pay around a $100.00) or serrated. I'll frequently use the knife to strip heavy guage wire, among other things. Thanks.

In a folder, I don't think you can get there from here at that price point.

But, if you are willing to consider a fixed blade, not a folder, and willing to go $125, there's this item on clearance - 4" L6 steel bill hook blade, full tang construction. Brass pinned Micarta scales with lanyard hole. Overall length: 8.5" weight 3.8 oz , here at # 833, by Mick Langley or # 835 if you prefer cocobolo to micarta scales.

If this profile is of interest, but $125 is too much, then look for something called an asphalt tile, or linoleum, knife. Less elegant, same blade geometry, with a high-carbon blade, and no sheath.

Beyond that, I dunno . . . .

Well, I stand corrected. Those are hard to beat price points.

Is the Harpy available in plain edge?

I could be wrong, but I don't think the Harpy is available in a plain edge.

Can I ask, why a hawkbill? And how large?

Would you consider a karambit? Spyderco has one for around $100.

Or a "leaf blade?" The Spyderco Cricket is quite small, but has a blade sorta-kinda like a modified, teenie-tiny hawkbill. IIRC, from about $30-55, depending upon the style and materials. Comes with synthetic or stainless grips and in a choice of edges, that is.

the harpy doesnt come in Plain edge
the spyderco Karambit does come in plain edge
the Spyderco Cricket and Dodo come with "reverse S" blades
kinda like a hawkbill bit with a bit of belly in it

I believe that the harpy had a plain edge version called the merlin but it is discontinued and I've not been able to find it in stock anywhere. It was the only PE hawkbill recently in the spyderco lineup, other than the karambit which was tempting but I'm worried that it will end up being a bit too far of a departure from a traditional pocketknife to be useful in lineman work.

Newo , thanks for the heads up on those fixed blade knives. I'm afraid I'd end up babying them though.

Mrd74 , the Crossbill sounds perfect! That is exactly what I'd like, quality and at a price that'll let me destroy/loose it and buy another. When will this knife be released? All I could find was a blurb from shot show saying sometime in february. If you see this knife available somewhere please let me know here or PM. Thanks for the heads up!

Chmsam, I work as a groundman on electric distribution circuits (powerlines) and am frequently stripping large guage wire. A hawkbill blade allows for good control of the blade and is also useful for cuting a ton of other stuff that I run into at work. I need a blade about 3-4 inches long.

Looks like the Spyderco Karambit is the closest so far. I've checked the Spyderco website and nothing shows up that has a plain edge. I'll keep looking.

If you contact New Graham Knives they should be able to tell you when they expect to get the Byrd Crossbill in stock.

Its a little more than what you wanted to pay, but check out the Microtech Hawk if you can, they are topnotch! I love my microtech.

Re: Help! Plz recommend a Hawkbill bladed knife...

Having done a few searches it looks like there's no middle ground on a plain edge hawkbill. Either it's a custom or semi-custom knife, or a cheaper, low quality steel knife. If serrations are OK, that'd be the way to go for the price you want.
