Help with night hiking illumination

Just out of curiosity, which SureFire set-ups do you have ?

Maybe it's a bit expensive, but I like the hotspot to surround beam ratios of the E2 and 8AX, so you would get a long range beam, but also enough surround light to navigate safely by.

There are some lights with clips for fireperson use, but I can't remember what they are ......

A lot of the guys use an light just clipped to a cap or headband, if that's any use. NiteIze make a headband Mag 2AA holder which should work well for an E2 diameter.

To watch without being seen by wildlife, red is supposed to be a light colour a lot of animals can't see.

Oh, and welcome aboard - great to see another Brit posting here. I worked your display name out: Alan, the Chemist = AlChemist, cool !!

A good clip light for night hiking is the pelican versabrightII. good solid (no dark spots) beam and very adjustable and sturdy. only problem is battery life (AA batteries) which is around 3 hours or so. i suppose with lithium AA's you'd get a longer run time. its a very dependable light. i know, i used mine in yosemite backcountry and its a good alternative to a headlamp.

kind of along these lines, i was wondering if there are any decent lights that have wrist bands...i think maybe there were some lights lik this on star trek or something, but i think a wrist light could be very cool...a nice cross between a headlamp and a flashlight and you could keep your hands free...even better would be a cool trigger that you could activiate with one hand, the hand attached to the wrist that the light is on...

A few months back, the local ski area I most frequent, purchased Princeton Tec Attitude LED flashlights for the employees that check tickets at night...and they had a similar setup, Velcro wrist strap/holder. The arraingement looked like it worked great, but the Attitude put out far less than enough light for the task. If noone else knows a manufacturer/source, next time I'm up there (in the next day or two) I'll ask about it and see if I can't get a little more info.

Cheers!

This might work

That's at flashware and reviewed at LED Museum
I haven't used it and Craig isn't enthusiastic about it but there it is.
The other possibility that comes to mind is the Petzl Zipka. It is a LED headlamp that has a pull out band that is supposed to go around arm or leg as well as head. Again I don't have it but someone(s) else here probably does. Hope that helps.

Alchemist, Vortec headlamp from PT comes with texturized reflector will provide ringless bright light. You could also change bulb to fit your brightness/runtime requirement.

I have been using Vortec for a while, it's very solidly built and waterproof. Before using Vortec, I used to use Petzl Zoom, Megabelt, Duo .... Vortec is my favorite due to its smooth light.

I always hike in foggy night as well. Headlamp (or any light close to eye level) works badly in such situation. Smooth beam like Vortec is even worse. Handheld light (don't hold it like LEO) with narrow beam will be much helpful.

thing looks massive!...although i like the extra storage and the fact that it holds it off of your arm a bit...i think an all-in-one unit (one that had a light built in) would do a better job...

Alchemist,

I came across this headlamp review site:

A propos of Alan's quote, I've found this hand carried, switched, waterproof light to be extremely powerful with a narrow, very penetrating beam, and remarkably compact for a 4-C light:

i use my elite xray for hiking. 50 plus hours on a set of 3 aa batteries, adjustable power when your eyes get used to the darkness, built in distress s.o.s., lightweight, waterproof. check it out.

In about a month you will be able to get a Black Diamond Super Nova. Much like the space shot but all on the head.
Xenon bulb, LED bulb w backup battery, textured reflector, Voltage regulator.

A UK MINI Q40 (4-AA)comes with a silicone strap for attaching it to a dive mask. That strap wraps nicely around a tennis wrist band, mounting the light on your wrist. Worked great as a caving backup.

Anyone got a Switchback? I am VERY anxious to see how it work. It seems like a dream headlamp:) It'd be even better if they have optional battery holder for 4AA/8AA instead of 4C.

The mini Q40 is a great light (despite some inconsistancies in reflector quality. I recommend lithium AA's - very bright and at least 4.5 hours of functional light (based on my run time tests.) It is extremely light (w. lithiums) - 3.7oz

Yeah, I'd like to hear about it too - interested to find out how bright the LEDs are. And can be focussed too. Only problem is price - $79.95 at REI is pretty high, double the cost of the PT Matrix..

Edit: I just did a quick search and found a place called
Karst Sports which has the Switchback for $59.95. Seems like a pretty good buy, and they ship internationally too.
Has anyone dealt with them before?

Graham
