Hey, an E1e w/MN03 on RCR123a works ok...

So the mailman dropped off my black HAIII E2e I bought from InfidelCastro here on CPF. Beautiful light. Curiousity got the best of me so I threw the head with the MN03 on the black E1e body I had sitting here with a batterystation 3.6v 900mah RCR123 and it lights pretty bright actually! Not as bright as with 2 primaries of course, but respectable. Anyway, just thought I'd share.

i had a e1w w/ MN03 on unprotected RCR123a
e1w is same as e1e, except w stands for winelight, and the whole flashlight is of burgandy color

although it works, it wasnt very bright
in fact, it was more yellow 😗

Hey KDOG3, that was supposed to be MY light LOL. Just
pulling your arm a little. Nice catch!:touche:

Isn't underdriving incan lamps supposed to reduce their lifetime?

Sorry, no beamshots, as jsr pointed out, underdriving the LA will probably kill it. So I'm not gonna risk it.

Heh, heh. I could've sworn he had 2 of them. Maybe he only had the one up for sale.

Hopefully Surefire will make all their lights black HAIII. Now to just find a black KL1 head for it...

I tryed that once,

Required double clicking to warm up the filament first.
Beam was bright but very yellow.

I used AW`s old Protected R123`s

Fun experiment,
Benny

Hey KDOG, was the beam yellow at all? I've thought about trying this myself but after doing a search, the general opinion was that it was too yellow. I'm not concerned with decreased lamp life, I just want a white beam. It was definitely brighter than the MN01 correct?

Thanks for the experiment! I might just pick up the MN03 and try it.

It was brighter than the MN01 - as in it had more overall output - but it was also yellower than the MN03 was on 2 new primaries.

I've never seen the MN03 beam before, so I guess it's hard for me to picture. I don't really consider the the MN01 to be yellow (just not much output), so is it comparable to that? Thanks again, I'll leave you alone now 🙂

I would say, those are probably the best R123's to try it with. I had two and they were excellent cells for the short time I used them. Two of them lit up a P90 lamp easily as bright as three CR123's if not brighter, and for a long time. No double clicking either and they both always came off the charger at a perfect 4.2V.

Just got an MN02 so when time permits I'll compare the MN03 & 2 with a LiIon cell in my E1e. My guess is that the MN03 will put out more light simply because it draws more current at the same voltage as the 02. This is just my unproven theory at this point because current isn't the limiting factor. If it were then I'd guess that the MN02 might be brighter.

That would be greatly appreciated! I'd like to hear your opinion of the MN03 with a single cell. Keep us updated!

OK...the MN03 in an E1 with an RCR123a consumes about 900mA and registers 360 on my meter. The MN02 draws only 440mA with a 330 brightness.

Although the MN03 was just noticeably brighter, I'd go with the longer runtime or the 02, myself. But with "free" lumens it won't matter if the slight increase of brightness outweighs a doubling of RT. The E1/LiIon/MN02 setup is very nice for walking in the woods or other lower lighting needs where LED's may wash out depth or color from the surroundings.

BTW, the difference between those two lamps diminishes quickly, in the E2e, because primary CR123's can't maintain their voltage too long at the MN03's one amp load. Unless you keep feeding fresh cells to the MN03, it has no advantage.
