HID around 400 $ ?

X995 is about $270, but it's not out yet (even though it's preliminarily close to being released)... X990's about $50-$100 above your quoted number ($450-$500)... I don't know about the X995, but the X990 does not have any problems associated with the LC100... Then again, the LC100 is a divelight, among other things (ballasts, bulbs, battery type, etc) so both aren't on an equal playing field when judged against each other...

May I ask a slightly OT question? What problems are there with the LC100? I must have missed that. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif

An LC100 costs about $170. The X990 costs about $470. I have one of each. Every other HID flashlight I know of that is available today costs even more.

If the LC100 is bright enough to server your needs I’m not sure what problems the LC100 has that are worth $300 extra. Sure, I would pay $30 more for something that reached full brightness in less than ten seconds, but I wouldn’t pay $300 for the privilege. There are lots of things that could be improved in the LC100 but they did get the price right.

The LC100 is much more compact than the X990 (but it is still not tiny!). I usually carry my LC100 in my car as a roadside emergency light but it would be harder to store the X990 unobtrusively.

This is not to denigrate the X990 but to point out a substantial cost difference.

My biggest problem with the LC100 is the bulb/ballast vulnerability. I lost $80 because the bulb died on me while the light rolled off of my closet chest (3 feet high) and onto the floor (carpeted and insulated floor, at that)... For the cost, it's outrageous how brittle the bulb is.

Now the X990 is a completely different story. While opening my car up, I had placed the X990 on top of my car's roof. Well, being that it isn't a flat road, the X990 tipped and dropped from the roof of the car to the ground, bounced around a couple of times, and had a few scratches to its yellow lens lip, the aluminum head and the battery body... Turns on and performs just as good as the day it came in the mail; quite a different experience than the LC100...

That's my problem with the LC100...

Already have it on preorder...

I'll do a few drops and see what it's like...
I will say, though, that if it's identical to the bulb/ballast of the LC100 (Welch Allen 10W sol-arc), then I'm not even going to shake it...

It will definately be interesting to get some feedback on these.
This one may be useful and near my price range.

If it is the sol-arc, well, group buy on bulbs? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif

Apparently, McCulloch makes their own ballasts, so we'll see if it's as tough as that of the X990...

From what others here have gleemed, don't go for the X995, at least for now. Even the Underwater Kenetics LC100 is better, not to mention cheeper to boot (~$200)... The X990 is definately leeps and bounds better than its smaller brother, and it's about $70 over $400...

Gee Falcon do we have a flashlight dropping fetish??? Seems like your dropping alot if exspensive lights.

LOL

Beast for around $400?

I've never really discussed the price of Beasts so I don't know of sure. Mainly because I don't think I've ever seen two exactly the same, and because price isn't an issue for those it is designed by, and designed for.

If the Beast ever comes to public retail (which I have never had any indication it will), it'll cost a hell of a lot more than $400. Perhaps not $4000 but you never know. The Beasts worth releasing may end up being totally different to the proto-types we've been shown already. I mean, it may not even use HID. Not everything that makes light is LED, HID or bulb you know!!
