High powered hand held lasers

Rotten Ron,

My laser is due in the next few days, if you (or anyone else) have any specific questions or tests you would like carried out, just post here or PM me and I'll see what I can do.

I now have a fairly good digital camera and will try and get some shots of the beam itself.

I received my 5mw laser from Dwight two weeks ago. I've been caught up in work and haven't had time to submit my observations. It is -awesome- bright, especially compared to my 5mw waterproof red laser that I bought as an underwater pointer for scuba diving. I'll have to think of a good way to waterproof the green laser since the red one was a bust underwater.

In the dark there is a very clearly discernable green beam reaching to infinity. It will work wonderfully as a pointer for astronomical objects.

I can easily discern a green dot on objects up to 1/2 mile away. I haven't had time to target anything further away.

Tonight is the first cloudy night in my area, so I'll let you all know how it does against the cloudcover

The cats prefer it to the red.

The only problem that I had was a tendency for the laser to dim and/or go out when held vertically. This appears to be because the batteries I'm using are a bit too short for the battery compartment (or the compartment is too long). A bit of foil in the tailcap solved that issue.

Cheers,

Rick

Thanks for the offer of info and pics. Just to know you guys are satisfied will help send my order on its way.Ron

Well it was worth the wait, my laser arrived this morning and it is bright.

The beam is clearly visible in all but direct sunlight and the spot can be seen from at least half a mile away (probably more).

Here are a few pictures of my new toy:

As above, but in total darkness:

* The red laser used for comparison is a standard keyring type, with 4 button cells squeezed inside instead of the usual 3.

I wouldn't hesitate to recommend one of Dwight's (Laser Guy) lasers to anyone wanting a greenie.

Just one note of caution, these lasers are extremely bright, if you value your eyesight do not look directly into the beam or view the spot at close range.

I wonder how these higher powered units perform on NIMH's?

Any less bright? Possible danger to electronics?

The fact that these things use AAA's is the only thing that bugs me. I think a 123 powered laser would be much better. Probably much longer time in the performance part of the discharge curve than AAA's (esp with the modified high output lasers). The body of the laser could be made shorter too.
