Hotwire M*g cookbook?

Is there a FAQ that describes the different hotwire M*g mods? You know, silly questions that I'd hate to bother people with and have been asked before like:

Q: I just touched a WA1166 with ungloved, oily fingers. Is the bulb hosed or is it salvagable?

Q: Will 9 NiMH AA batteries fry a WA1185?

So you see, a sticky FAQ would be quite nice. If such an animal exists, can someone point me in the right direction?

Thanks all!

Yes there is a cookbook. Go to the search and search for "cook" because some are spelled cookbook and some are spelled cook book.

If you got oil on the bulb I think it could be cleaned off with solvent.

9 AA NiMH is the right number to overdrive a WA1185. It will shorten the life but won't fry it right away. In a maglite this is what we call a Mag85.

Ah, yes! "Cookbook!" Who would have thunkit? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Thanks again, everyone.

There ya go!

And I'd also let you all know that a few of the top hot wire modders are collaborating on a website that covers all things tungsten-related. We'll have bulb, battery and configuration information as well as detailed build recipes and articles on basics such as light and battery measurement and pack building. And that's just the the start of a more ambitious plan. It's not public yet, but over the next few months it'll go live and you're all invited to come by and visit. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

There ya go Wilkey, letting the cat out of the bag!!

Promising all this stuff that we're going to HAVE to deliver now!!

I intentionally stayed out of this thread, trying to see if some of the unknown hotwire guys would answer, so we could identify a few more of us among the group!!

Oh well, now you all know, good things are coming from the Three Amigos and their friends!!

They used to put disclaimers on halogen bulbs telling you to not touch them and if touched by fingers clean with alcohol I believe isopropyl (rubbing alcohol). It has something to do with either the oil or acid in the skin secreted reacts with the glass under the intense heat.

I took an old halogen bulb from my living room lamp into the store to buy another. The guy behind the counter said "you're not supposed to touch those with your hands". I said "well since this one is burned out I don't think it will hurt it."

Hi Bill,

Sorry! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif I just couldn't resist. I know this is something we've been thinking about and working on for so long that to finally see it happen is sort of a dream.

/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/popcorn.gif So when do we get to see? There will be a formal unveiling I assume. Lights shining in the sky.....

I believe AuroraLite is working on something like a recipe for M*g mods. He should have tons of information posted when he is done. I can't wait to see /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/buttrock.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/buttrock.gif

Excellent!

Getting the information out there for general review and enjoyment is the right thing to do. We'd be honored to link to any pages that provide good hot wire information.

I think part of the appeal of our website will be the focus on storytelling in support of hard information. After all, it's all about having fun while blinding self, friends and small (maybe large) animals /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Wilkey, is there some reason you don't just use the CPF wiki to put your stuff? Would it be ok if I (or anyone else) put material from your existing cookbook posts there? Wiki's are a really great way to build up a body of knowledge like this, since everyone can contribute.

Just built a M*g85 amd WOW! Water vapor keeps condensing on the reflector, though. Never had that happen with a Luxeon!

Paul,

It's our choice to do the initial build of the knowledge base through a site we manage. It's simple really: we're perfectionists and value a structured approach to presenting information much as we apply a structured approach to designing the builds and writing instructions.

It's also an issue of ownership and control in the best sense. By this, I mean we want to provide, first and foremost, a site that is information-rich with a high signal-to-noise ratio. There are plenty of places to discuss and debate in a community and at least in its first incarnation, we can't implement and support this on our site.

Finally, we want to focus our work exclusively on incandescent and other "hot" technologies and plans further down the line require that we manage this on a private site.

As for posting anything I've written here, that's fine. It's in the public domain. I won't be doing it though because I just don't have the time.

Wilkey

Thanks, being able to paste from your CPF posts to the wiki will be very helpful in improving the wiki. I'm looking forward to seeing your site too.
