I am going to gift several Hound Dog Super to three family members who hunt and live on farms in corn and bean country. Also has some woods and creeks mixed in, this is central Illinois.

I've ordered one neutral light for myself from Malkoff in the neutral 4000K, which I prefer. It is also offered in a cool 5700K version.

Does anyone have any input on tint for farm uses?

I may just order a cool model and take my neutral up to them and let them decide. They will each be getting a charger, 2 18650s, tube spacers and Tricaps from Malkoff.

For reference:

I prefer the 4000k. But if you need maximum throw to the detriment of cri, the cooler version is the ticket.

As an aside be aware that 2 18650s is one load. If you anticipate needing to swap out batteries, good idea to have a second pair. Label them and always use together and only in a 2 cell light.

Thanks, I did E-Mail Malkoff, they said pretty much the same thing, cool for distance, neutral for closer in. I've got the neutral on order for me and after I check it out a bit I'll order a cool. I'll take both of them when I visit my 3 relatives and let them decide.

I appreciate the battery info and have a pretty good understanding of them. I'll explain to them about the batteries and safety. They should do fine, responsible adults.

The first Neutral 4000K Hound Dog Super has arrived. I went ahead and ordered the cool.

The plan is to take both to the in-laws farm and see which ones they prefer, three of my relatives.

I wrapped a cable tie around it for my lanyard. Any accessories I need to know about? A lens cover would be nice.

The batteries are charging...

I have learned a few things. The cool version arrived so I compared it to the neutral on a 2 mile walk (paved bicycle path).

I'm more of a neutral light fan but the cool dog looks OK to me. I would still stick with the neutral for myself. Neither one has a lot of artifacts and rings and look a bit better than how they are described on the Malkoff website even while white wall hunting. I was quite pleased with both.

I'm glad I'm gifting these. Way too much light for my needs and heavy. On my walk, low actually worked pretty good. The trail was empty so I did try out high quite a bit. Just an amazing amount of light with a balanced spot/spill. The cool did seem brighter than the neutral.

I could see for farm use going either way with the tint, I'll still let them decide. If I lived on a farm or hunted, this would be a nice light. Three of them are getting a light, I have a neutral and a cool so I hope they pick one of each tint at least. If not I can stash one at the mother in laws for emergency use (she lives on a farm too).

They supplied both lights with a body tube spacer which is white (it is visible on the assembled flashlight). It's needed if your running protected cells. I ordered a couple black ones and replaced the white spacer with black plus one extra black for the parts box.

I noticed they also sell battery bumpers, I assume for firearms mounted lights?
