How does 6R compare to 8X?

Hi all,

I was wondering what would be the better buy, considering light output, bulk, accessories, cost,...

A 6P with a conversion kit to make it rechargeable or an 8X? Already have an E2 and love it, so the "back-up for the rechargeable" issue is covered

Is it correct that the initial cost is almost the same?

Has anybody got any accounts of using the high output P61 or the plain P60 in a rechargeable 6R? does it give more light than the standard bulb?

How do the 8X and the extended 6P compare in size? Has anyone got a pic? PK's site?

Would love to hear your comments on these lights

I don't have an 8x but I have a 9N and a
6R/P. The 6P/R was my first surefire and
is still very useful. In fact if I could only have one surefire this might still be it.

The 6R with the P61 120 lumen lamp is really amazing. It is as bright as the M3 combatlight, but will only last a bit over 12 minutes on the charge. With a pair of surefire lithiums I got about 20 minutes.

With the weaker R60 lamp it is good for coseup work and lasts over an hour on the lithiums and 40 min on the rechargable.

Initially I had 2 P61 bulbs blow out (I mean exploded) on the rechargable. Surefire told me these bulbs were defective and that they should have performed correctly and sent me new bulbs to back that up. Indeed they ahve worked fine.

On the otherhand, the 9N is a good duty light and gets a good 40 minutes from a charge and I would guess the 8x gets a little more.

Hope that wasn't too wordy. Good luck!

My recommedation is to go with the 6R. I have both the 8X and the 6R. I carried the 8X for about 6 months and I really do like the light, but the 6R is more adaptable and and a bit brighter. I would suggest sticking with the P60 bulb, R60s arent made anymore and the P60 bulb is brighter anyway. The P61 is brighter, but the reduction in runtime is a factor to consider.

I posted a longer response to this question on the SureFire discussion board under a similiar question if you want to check that out.

Thank you all,

The scales are balancing slightly towards the 6R conversion side. I hadn't heard about the standard 6R lamp not being produced anymore. But I would like the idea of a somewhat broader beam, requiring more lumens, as with the 8X. The limited runtime of the 6R with the high output lamp is rendering it less useful.

Is the 6R a lot smaller in size?

Now I'll just have to wait for my birthday to come by (If I can wait that long)

I have an 8AX, also an E2. The 8AX is noticeably brighter then the E2. The center of the beam is just slightly brighter but there is a much wider area of coverage. The 6P with the standard P60 lamp is rated very similar to that of the E2 so I'm sure an 8X is going to be brighter then a 6P with a standard P60 lamp. Also, it's reported that the 8X will be offering a higher intensity lamp then the one that is standard now.

This is a question that's interesting me greatly. (Soon, I'll have both anyway, and will be able to directly compare ! )

Luca, emeraldwolf's post is @

One other factor - I have noticed that the A14 body adapter for the 6P to 6R option is beautifully engineered. You can have confidence in the joined/extended body of the 6R.

geepondy, I remember that the new higher intensity lamp assembly announced for the 8xX is a 200 Lumen. (I think it's called the X81 ? )

Guesstimating (ONLY ! ), if twice the Lumens means one third of the runtime, that implies 20 minutes at 200, as opposed to the 50 minutes with 110 Lumen standard output.

I believe it was me that called the high output lamps for the 8xX & KT5 version the "X81" and "N51". Unless I was on the right track, these are not offical SureFire names, and these lamps may not be in the works although I hope they are.

A 200Lu TurboHead version for a rechargeable SureFire is an option I'd very much love to have.
