I have the SF L4 and SF U2 and was wondering if anyone using the two flashlights know how long the leds last under normal conditions, EDC and also for prolonged periods I know that they can get very uncomfortable especially the L4 when left on for a long time, and know the effects. Thanks in advance.

The LuxV's are rated for minimum 500hours, driven at specs. The lifetime depends on different factors. The enemy is heat.
A propper heatsink has to transfer the heat away from the Led. Is the Led not much overdriven and the heatsink works (that should be the case with your SF's), there is no need to worry about.
How long in years depends on your personel usage.

Hope this helps:)

I've had my L4 on for basically the entire battery life (Im EMS and we had a person stuck down a large bank out in the country - no lights what so ever!) So I needed to use my L4 for around 2hrs, the whole time I had it in my hands and yes it got warm but it never got too hot to touch - considering the cold night I was actually rather happy to be holding a small light producing heater!

500 hours? Light bulbs usually last longer than that.

Spoken in context, they don't.
Flashlight bulbs last a single digit hours, sometimes low 10s.

An average 120v 100W bulb lasts around 750 hours.

Under proper operation 50% of 32W fluorescent lamps last 24,000 hrs while maintaining 85+ % output.

I was under the impression that the 500 hour figure isn't about failure, but about "lumen maintenance". Meaning that its maximum brightness is rated for 500 hours, after which it will still put out light, but not at its original rated level. The Luxeon V has been out long enough that this could be confirmed by lab testing.

Does anyone know what the true meaning of the 500hr. figure means?
