How much heat can a Cree XR-E star dissipate?

I dont know ,but I would guess VERY little at any decently driven Current with out some other form of heat disipation.

Do the Cree's pop off the star like the luxeons do?

They are not really designed for running without a heatsink. Their packaging screams of careful attention to thermal management. But if I were to guess, no more than a couple hundred mW, maybe less. Why would you want to run it without a heatsink?

i dunno... why don't you ask the folks over in the LED forum... this for Homemade and Modified lights

It's going in a homemade bike light.

I'm planning on attaching it to a heatsink, I'm just curious about it.

Are you going to attach the star to anything? Anything it's attached to can be considered a heatsink, in which case if you give us some idea of what that something is we could help you out. If you're just going to have the star floating unattached, heed the suggestions above.
