How to cycle through modes and 'freeze' the modes on 14442 with a twistie?

Just got the 14442 today, but I can't seem to freeze the mode when using it momentarily. Can anyone walk me through this? Twisting it to constant on works, just not the momentarily option.

twist it repeatedly until you land on the mode of your choice and leave it there... if you turn it off, wait for a ~second or two and turn it back on. It will remember the last mode used.
