I've got a growing collection of dvd movies. And I hate them. They make me want to stomp them and the player into the dirt.

Reason? The menus. When I play a disc it takes forever to get to the movie, and you cannot hit ff/next/etc in the previews/menus. More and more discs are coming this way.

I have a dvd recorder in my pc, and want to rip JUST the movie and record it back to single layer dvd. I don't care if I lose a little quality..... it'll still be better than VHS (which is what I'm getting ready to go back to).

Help!

I have easy cd/dvd creator and nero. I've also got pinnacle studio.... and it will let me make a dvd from an avi/etc file.

Re: how to copy my dvd movies?

ok use dvd decrpter to rip them.then you use gordain knot to turn em to divx or xvid

Re: how to copy my dvd movies?

Re: how to copy my dvd movies?

I doubt turbdog's DVD player can play .avi files. Most can't yet. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif You'll probably need DVDShrink. You know when you rip it into JUST the movie, you can no longer select chapters and can only navigate with FF and RWD, right? BTW please change your title to 'how to BACKUP my dvd movies?' /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Re: how to copy my dvd movies?

If you want to burn them onto CD, you should keep the file size to 719 MB max. Even with overburn, I can't seem to get 720 MB on a CD. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif Tips anyone? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Re: how to copy my dvd movies?

opps yeah i didnt think about that

Re: how to copy my dvd movies?

Turbodog, there's lots of dvd-decrypting programs that let you rip from DVD, or you could get a player with macrovision disabled (or mod the macrovision out of your player), which would let you record the analog output to a set-top dvd or vhs recorder. I think the best approach though is political: vote with your wallet, stop buying dvd's. Those studios are not entitled to control your eyeballs and there's no reason for you to let them.

Re: how to copy my dvd movies?

im glad my dvd player dont have macrovsion.i highly recomend the philips i forget model number its cheap like 54 bucks it has macrovision disabled it plays xvid divx and mpeg4.a course it plays dvds to

Re: how to copy my dvd movies?

Re: how to copy my dvd movies?

Dvd shrink fails part of the way through the first movie I tried: the day after tomorrow. I'll go try pulp fiction in a minute.

This dvd thing is getting to be like theatre movies. Dang things come with 15+ minutes of commercials/previews before the movie starts.

Re: how to copy my dvd movies?

Pulp fiction failed on a complete copy, but a partial copy with edited start/finish times is doing ok so far.

Re: how to copy my dvd movies?

crap, PF just failed about 1/2 way through.

anyone wanna buy a crapload a dvd movies?

Re: how to copy my dvd movies?

Tip:

Rip with the newest version of DVD Decrypter and save the files to a folder. Open those files with Shrink. Choose re-author and select the movie file only. There's tons of software and many different ways to do this. Checkout this forum:

I thought some Apex players allow menu skipping.

Overly long menus/intros and non skippable previews are a pain in the butt. I think I read hollywood lobbyists wanted to have a law to prevent DVD players being built with the ability to skip menus/ previews.

Re: how to copy my dvd movies?

Ok,

Good results so far. I extracted the whole movie and am usng dvd skrink to compress it.

On a side note..... let's hear it for my new hard drives. They are reading at 14MB/sec and simultaneously writing at 10MB/sec with plenty of speed left over to browse the web, read email, etc.

How about starting the 'movie' and then go play with flashlights for a while. Then come back and you can controll the movie /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Sadly, that doesn't even always work. Movie will loop through the main menu. Then after you start the movie you usually get: 1)thx logo 2)fbi warning 3)interpol warning 4)etc.

Really really sucks.

Re: how to copy my dvd movies?

Well right now I'm just waiting for the movie to burn. We'll see what happens.
