Greetings!

First, I'm new here and thanks to you all for great information. Tell me if I'm posting this question in the wrong section.

I have an interest in modifying a SureFire 9N so that the 140 main lamp is untouched, but to replace the 20 lumen side light with a white LED. The voltage is just right (about 3.6-3.75 volts) I figure it would run over 20 hours continuously.

BUT, do you think the LED in general can take the heat from the main lamp, or melt?

Thanks,

JoeyL

Thanks, I'll post this on the LED side also.

The idea of a hybrid is a good one. I modified an Eveready outdoor lantern by replacing the battery with my old and now-defunct NiMH cellphone batteries (adding up to 4000 mAH new) which runs a 800 ma xenon bulb for 3.5 hours straight. Then I added a side switch and stuck a white LED in the side and it has been a great nightlight when camping and it stays lit for a week straight before needing recharge.

Thanks

JoeyL

This is one of the things I'd like to see from SureFire.

I suppose you'll do better in the LED forum. There is cross-talk however. I for one would like to be kept informed of any developments.

Modifying a "normal" flashlight to LED is one thing, but creating a hybrid which would have the best of both worlds is something for both forums me thinks.

My questions about this not only related to how well the LED handles the heat from the main lamp, but also whether the LED can be specially sanded to create the best possible beam from it's off-set position within the 9N reflector...

OK, I did it.

I put in a white LED in the place of the smaller lamp in my 9N. I ran the main lamp for a full 20 minutes and the LED works fine! This is really cool to have both types of lights in one unit. Now if I could just find a higher output 3mm LED. I used some orphans sold by C. Crane that they advertise were too blue for their lights.

However, the hybrid light made by Gadget in the other forum really is the coolest.
