sometimes we wonder what the heck topping and slowing down at the end of charge is for, what purpose does it serve to slow down neer the end of charge on say a li-ion, why not just keep pumping in the same power?
and THIS is how i always pictured it.

:crazy::crazy::crazy::crazy::crazy:😀 This is your mostly discharged battery
:crazy::crazy::crazy::crazy::crazy::crazy: And the chemicals that have converted to the other state
:crazy::crazy::crazy::crazy::crazy::crazy: as you can see some of the chemicals were/will never fully
:crazy:😀:crazy::crazy::crazy::crazy: convert , it still has a few ma left
:crazy::crazy::crazy::crazy::crazy::crazy:
:crazy::crazy::crazy:😀:crazy::crazy:
:crazy::crazy::crazy::crazy::crazy::crazy:
:crazy::crazy::crazy::crazy::crazy::crazy:
:crazy::crazy:😀:crazy::crazy::crazy:
:crazy::crazy::crazy::crazy::crazy::crazy:

:crazy::crazy::crazy::crazy::crazy:😀 at the first of your charge
:crazy:😀:crazy:😀:crazy::crazy: there are many and many willing chemicals
:crazy::crazy::crazy::crazy:😀:crazy: ready to convert over to the other state
:crazy:😀:crazy::crazy::crazy::crazy: so potentially you can slam it pretty hard
:crazy::crazy::crazy::crazy::crazy:😀 and the charge will be "accepted"
:crazy::crazy::crazy:😀:crazy::crazy: lots of chemicals ready there to be changed up
:crazy:😀:crazy::crazy::crazy::crazy:
:crazy::crazy::crazy::crazy:😀:crazy:
:crazy::crazy:😀:crazy::crazy::crazy:
:crazy::crazy::crazy::crazy:😀:crazy:

😀:crazy:😀:crazy:😀😀 neerer to the end of charge
:crazy:😀:crazy:😀😀:crazy: more of the chemicals have already changed over
😀:crazy:😀😀😀😀 so the power going in is going to less stuff
:crazy:😀:green:😀:green::crazy: so if you hit it hard then
:green::green:😀:crazy:😀😀 most of the stuff is already switched over
:crazy:😀:crazy:😀:green::green: most of the stuff Cant "accept" a charge
😀:green:😀:green::crazy::green: if you keep pounding it in more of the power
😀:crazy::green::crazy:😀:crazy: goes out as heat
:green:😀😀😀:crazy::green: these things take time , like any chemical reaction
:green::crazy:😀😀😀:crazy:

😀😀😀:green:😀😀 eventually everything that will change state
:crazy:😀😀😀:green::crazy: already has changed state
😀😀:green:😀😀😀 so the power going in is going to nothing
😀😀:green:😀:green:😀 and just wasted as heat more and more
:green::green:😀:crazy:😀😀
😀😀😀😀:green::green:
😀:green:😀:green:😀:green:
😀😀:green:😀😀:green:
:green:😀😀:green:😀:green:
:green::crazy:😀😀:green:😀

😀😀😀:green:😀😀 and keep this up after the thing is mostly
:crazy:😀😀😀:faint::crazy: charged up and you just
😀😀:green:😀:green:😀 start destroying stuff
😀😀:faint:😀:green:😀 that was already happily charged up
:green::green:😀😀😀😀
:green:😀:green:😀:faint::green:
😀:green:😀:green:😀:green:
😀😀:faint::green:😀:green:
:faint:😀😀:green::green::faint:
:green::crazy:😀😀:green:😀

😀:green::green::green:😀:green: by slowing down, and topping and stuff
:crazy:😀:green:😀:green::crazy: at the end of the charge
😀:green::green:😀:green:😀 you have a better chance of
:green:😀:green:😀:green::green: achieving fuller conversion
:green::green:😀😀:green:😀 without destruction
:green:😀:green:😀:green::green:
😀:green::green::green::green::green:
😀:green::green::green:😀:green:
:green:😀:green::green::green::faint:
:green::green:😀:green::green:😀

next week i will explain the cookie monster 🙂

now in discharge, we Reverse this same idea, and end up with the same basic logic.

😀:green::green::green:😀:green: This being your mostly charge cell
:crazy:😀:green:😀:green::crazy: that has many and many chemicals ready
😀:green::green:😀:green:😀 jump back to thier other state
:green:😀:green:😀:green::green:
:green::green:😀😀:green:😀
:green:😀:green:😀:green::green:
😀:green::green::green::green::green:
😀:green::green::green:😀:green:
:green:😀:green::green::green::faint:
:green::green:😀:green::green:😀

:crazy::crazy::crazy::crazy::crazy:😀 yet neer the end of discharge
:crazy::crazy::crazy::crazy::crazy::crazy: there is less chemicals even able to
:crazy::crazy::crazy::crazy::crazy::crazy: change states , soooooo
:crazy:😀:crazy::crazy::crazy::crazy: when some driver , or hotwire
:crazy::crazy::crazy::crazy::crazy::crazy: or mean power sucking vaccume
:crazy::crazy::crazy:😀:crazy::crazy: is still hitting the battery hard loaded
:crazy::crazy::crazy::crazy::crazy::crazy: what did you expect the poor thing to do
:crazy::crazy::crazy::crazy::crazy::crazy:
:crazy::crazy:😀:crazy::crazy::faint:
:crazy::crazy::crazy::crazy::crazy::crazy:

Next thing you know, someone will build a flashlight with that feature. "Shows remaining battery status in an easy to understand and ludicrous form." A touchscreen won't be a such a bad UI, right?:crackup:

:crackup: :crackup: :crackup:
Here I am eating lunch I couldn't help spraying rice all over the place😱:ohgeez:

this must be one of the best illustrative tutorials on battery charging:nana:

Good representation. There's an article at the battery university that discusses the vagaries of battery meters and suggests an ideal meter would show an increasing "unusable" zone as the battery ages instead of the usual 0-100% battery icon, which is obviously misleading when you only have, say, 60 percent of original capacity to start with... They use rocks, but frowny-faces would be better. 🙂
