Back in 2002 I made 2 mistakes.
1) I forgot to check the Solitaire in my pocket, otherwise I would know the battery was dead and grabbed the Dorcy 2AA in my desk drawer.
2) Once I found my Solitaire was dead, I was so thrown I tried to feel my way up the stairs instead of backing out and going to the nearest corner store for batteries. Feeling my way up the stairs was the easy part. Keeping track of which floor I was on was the scary part.

I had bought a Radio Shack branded Turtlelite/Dorcy 4AA 1LED floating lantern. I was impressed with the runtime so went looking for a pocketable LED light. Google brought me to CPF and...
Well with my trusty Turtlelite I went down to the local big downtown mall. Took 4 days for power to be restored to the whole mall.
-----
During the last blackout I grabbed a couple of flashlights to go see how far it extended. The hallway was lit up. Huh! Started to go down the normally lit stairs. Met the super huffing & puffing up the stairs with an armful of plastic flashlights. Told me he had to get the generator started.
-
Went down to the mall. Lit up as usual on the main floor. Wondered down the stairs to the washroom. Stairs & washroom was lit up. Parking garage was not. The mall had also put in backup generators.

A couple of years ago I used to toss my newspapers at night. One light outside the back door. The recycle bins were in an alcove like dent in the building in the dark. I used to sit my Electrolumens My Little Friend bezel up in it's holster to ceiling bounce and let me see the bins clearly. There was no knob on the door so I had to go around the building to go back in. There was a bit of lawn with a tree on one side.
-
Then they found room for the bins inside the building.

I got a Dereelight with the Q2 5A warm white pill. The beam looked brown. LukeA said I have to shine that light on REAL things. After watching the fireworks from my balcony on Canada day I grabbed the Dereelight and went out back. Ulp. The building managers had purchased an open lot behind the building for additional parking, and lit it up good. There is a row of lights on the back wall of the building so tenants can go to the parking lot at night. The tree was lit from all sides.
Went around front. There was some trees across the street, but with a streetlight directly opposite and others on each side.
I remembered some trees on the roof of the mall. The top of the mall was as well lit as the streets below.
I went to bed without finding any unlit real things.

I don't need my lights anymore.:sigh:

I think I need a few drinks before trying to make sense out of this post.

:crackup::crackup:

i get where your coming from, at this time of the year it doesnt get dark until around half ten and even at that there is too many street lights. I go driving around looking for dark places to shine my torches, i also wait until its dark to walk the dog... any excuse lol:grin2:

I feel sorry for you city people with lights all around you :p I live on a farm in Norway, and when it's dark it's DARK. At least in the winter. Only a couple of hours of daylight each day in the darkest period. And in the north there's darkness all day in the winter, but daylight 24 hours of the day in the summer though.

I suggest you immediately contact a Realtor about acquiring some land out in the country where you can control all the ambient lighting.

I'm trying to find ways to take my own advise, but the lights keep calling to me...

I like this story telling. Cool write up actually!

I find myself rarely using my horde of lights due to ambient lighting just the same , however maybe it's my older eyes giving me fits in low light conditions or it's that i just like well defined details. I use my pocket NovaTac mostly and play out the others for range or hiking outdoorsy type adventures... (and bike rides at night)...but the main uses still are to define what is inside a drawer or under a hood or in a lurking shadow...

....The shadow knows, and as such.... I want to know too.

Move to San Francisco... the city evidently doesn't believe decent street lighting is worth investing in. Then again, it also doesn't believe pot holes are worth filling.

LOL. I've got a buddy who lives in the boonies, no streetlights or anything. I was out there last week. I swear my M60 is the brightest light on earth now!
I didn't realize how much overkill even my little lights really are.

Better Yet,
Imagine this on CNN.
"Breaking news: A flashaholic extremist movement known only as 'cpf' has declared war on all streetlights. Streetlights are advised to travel in groups and stay indoors after dark"

You've seen the light, or should I say the darkness:thinking:. Out hear the ambient light is determined by the moon. It's crazy how much the total light changes with the weather / moon fazes. Some time's it appears really bright out side "for me" other times it's almost spooky dark. I live about 7 minuets from the highway "though much farther from any light pollution "besides myself". But the other day I went to a friends house who lives 45 minutes from the highway, during fog and a new moon. It was so unsettlingly dark there that instead of my lights looking brighter they looked duller:sweat::eeksign:! As anyone who reads most of my post know I like the 2.35 watt sealed beam lanterns "just bought two more on line", they probably wonder why I like them so much, besides a very small bright hotspot their only other good feather is their 180 degree flood, which to city dwellers is far to dim to be seen any were but indoors, but out in the forest here it's quiet reveling:twothumbs.

The O.P. keeps trying to use his lights for actual needs. But is always thwarted by light from other sources, or circumstances that make it so that he doesn't actually need to use his light. And he has gotten to the point where every situation has been taken care of. So he no longer needs his lights.

I say, keep them around.... just in case. :)

I guess the OP never goes outdoors to go hiking, walking, biking, rollerblading, fishing, picnics, swimming, outdoor weddings, parties, strolls, etc...

Those who are confined only within their homes, stores, and work certainly may not need a flashlight. That's not a lifestyle that I'd personally enjoy. I do far too many activities outside which are not always well lit.

Those who do outdoor activities as I outlined above will certainly appreciate having a light.
