As far as I know there are no IMR D cells in existence; you would either have to use 26650s or the LiFe PO4 D cells. LiCo cells won't be able to handle anywhere near 13 amps.

As for switches, you might want to look into something like this:

It is fairly expensive, but should remove all of the heat sensitive components from the maglite, as well as give you a soft start, multiple levels, and a bi pin holder. Of course, I don't know if it will fit in your older maglite.

I have still not been able to locate a metal reflector. Any help would be welcome.
