Sigh, Somewhere along the way I have lost my trusty JIL and need a new small and pocketable EDC. This rides in my pocket with the keys and change, so size and durability of the finish are key factors. It will see daily use in 10 to 30 second bursts totaling 5 minutes or so per day.
Of course another JIL is an option but it looks like there may be better choices available. The P1D CE is an obvious contender though with the CR123 it will of course be larger. Anything comparable with a CR2?
Anything over $100 would be very difficuly to justify to SWMBO...

I love my Smartfire/Luxogen LR12. You can get it for cheap at Dealextreme here:

It can run a primary 3V CR2 or a 3.7V RCR2. It's quite bright on either one. I have the HAIII version which was offered by Waion. I also ordered the TypeII ano version from DX and waiting for it to arrive. The HAIII on my various Luxogen/Smartfire lights are great. My wife has a Luxogen LR5A (123A light) on her bundle of keys and it bangs against keys, a knife, a Leatherman Micra, and everything else in her purse and I haven't seen a scratch yet on it. Machining quality is very good. I really wanted a Jil before and waited and procrastinated. I'm honestly glad I did as the LR12 is such a great light, and for a much much lower price. I've found that Luxogen (which eventually gets rebranded as Smartfires) offer amazingly good machining and anodizing quality, very good performance (runtime and output), and workmanship...especially for the price.

Oh, and if you want it brighter, the pill is easy to remove (others have done it...search for Luxogen LR12) and pop a SSC P4 U-bin on there and BAM!!!...BRIGHT!!!

The small size and quality of the JIL make it a great EDC light. The other CR2 lights I've seen have been somewhat larger. I'd say get a JIL JCR2 (with the McR-18 reflector).

If you want something smaller (and more expensive) than the JIL, the Draco is the smallest and brightest keychain light available.

There are a number of options if you want a light that uses AAA-size cells, but I find them rather long for a keychain and they suffer from the small reflector size compared to the JIL.

The PIERCE M10i is a nice light for $70. I got mine on Saturday, and am quite impressed. Here is a link to the CPF special offer: http://www.piercelight.com/CPF.htm

It has two settings, .4A and 1A, and two choices of optics, narrow and wide beam. The Luxeon 3W is very white and bright. It is amazing that such a small light can put out so many lumens.

I have had my eye on the JIL JCR2, and am trying to scrape the cash together to buy one. I feel your pain in losing such a nice light. Hopefully it will turn up somewhere in your car or house.
