I am a newbie on this site and very impressed. I will be participating in an Off-Shore sailing race from Newport RI to Bermuda this summer. I am in the market for a pocketable, water resistant, powerful flashlight that can be dimmable and used in Red or White mode. Ideally, I would need one that I can mount on my forehead to look up at the tell tales of the sails and one I could use in emergencies with a long life between replacement batteries. I read about red LED's being more powerful and efficient than filtered white LED's, but I am not sure if anyone makes a light with those specs. Appreciate your help.

Rigel has a couple of lights that put out BOTH red (660nm -- read DEEP Red, not Red/Orange - 630nm - advertised as RED by most vendors) and white, with EXTREMELY variable output.

The original model is the more weather resistant of the two.

Depending on your Light Culture you may still need two lights to do what you need to do. If it turns out that in fact, you do need two lights -- keep this one in mind for the red one.

Merci Sub Umbra - very helpful. It looks a little flimsy but seems that it will work fine. Now I need to get something similar as a head lamp.

I appreciate your help. De nouveau merci beaucoup

Olight M20 crimson for the red, or ZebralightH51r if a little floody is ok.

Streamlight SupertacX for the thrower in white has awesome throw for it's brightness

I have a Zebralight H31 and it's a good solid headlamp. The H51 or h501 would probably suit you better.
I have an h51r on order which is the red led version

I'm not saying that Zebralight is the best, I have far too little experience, but these things are Cheap for how light, solid, and versatile they are... I would be really cautious about light's enviromental seals in a marine environment. Check jorn's link fore sure.

Are we talking about a salt environment?

If so, my recommendation of the Rigel is wide of the mark. It's just not up to it.

Zebralight, Fenix, Surefire, pelican, Streamlight would all do well in a sea environment

Yes, it is very much a salt air environment. Thanks for the caution. I guess the Searchlight H51r is my only choice. Appreciate your thoughtfulness.

Great read on Single handed sailor From SF to Hawai. Also, excellent report on Zebralight H501 in a salt air environment. He is a singlehanded cruiser (my hat is off to him) but we are racing so I will need the red LED's and very dimmable white or my team mates will throw me overboard. Thanks for the link.
