There are so many mag mods out there, I just don't know what to do. I'd like to build a mag to blow away a WE Shark I 24 watt HID in brightness and throw. Can it be done? I don't care about run time. What mag host, bulb and battery combo can do this? I have some ideas but would like more. I've done a mag 85, now I need something insane:) Oh, I'd like it to look like a stock mag too.

correct me if wrong but the WE shark is 1800L...so you may need to look at 100/75W mods.
This is the most powerful maglite mods list. you can find it helpful becouse you must look over 1800L (over USL mod).
I'm going to mod a 6D with the osram bulb 64623 driven by 13 2/3A 1500mah batteries...:D it will output more than 4400L, so this mod may be perfect...but may be not... the 64623 is a really big bulb and has a really big filament so the beam will be very flood using any small reflector
(like 2" reflector) and will not throw further than the WE...
I don't now what will happend with a bigger head...(FM's Throwmaster)
and anyway the flashlight will not look like a stock mag...

Yep, I plan on atleast 100 watts. But do I use a 2 d, 3d, 4d, 6d, stock, tri bored, quad bored, AA, A, 2/3 A or other battery? If I can figure out what host, bulb, batteries and battery pack pack to use, I can figure out the rest.

I wish, don't have the $$:) I just need a stock looking 2 or 3D mag with 2000 + lumens. I'm hoping to be able to build one for around $200 or less. I would like to be able to use a stock mag host and not have to get one that is bored. Do you think that is possible? Or am I going to have to get a bored host?

I think I've posted this link like 10 times already :D

Tutorial: How to fit 4 Energizer 2500 cells across in a D-Mag without boring!
http://www.candlepowerforums.com/vb/showthread.php?t=107772

I didn't mean Maxabeam HID, but Mad Maxabeam's Maxablaster mag mod... can't remember how much they go for, but should be $200-300?

I did a 150w MR-16 mod, and I believe its around 6-7k lumens, but probably will need a proper 5D sized Mag to house the batts.

http://www.candlepowerforums.com/vb/showthread.php?t=110551&highlight=starglobe

100w, 12v bulbs can work in a 3D host using 3Dto12AA batt adapter BUT the current draw is about 8A and might be a bit much for regular Sanyo 2700 NiMh batts. That's why you probably need some of those RC-strength NiMh cells which usually require boring the mag.

if this can help, my mag should be:

-MAG6D standard
-KIU socket
-BOROLENS
-METAL REFLECTOR
-PVC tube (for batteries)
-13 2/3A batteries (ELITEs 1500 from CBP)
-OSRAM 64623 as HIGH bulb
-OSRAM 64610 as LOW bulb
-battry charger

as I have told you in the post #2 with this bulb you can have a lot of power but without a good throw

EDIT: if you prefer the 3D size you must buy a battery pack made with 12 high current nimh batteries like titanium 1800 or buy a 3D>12AA battery holder and use the same batts.
in both options you need to bore out the mag standrd tube.

Great, thanks for the replies. I think I'm going to look for a good 100 watt 12v bulb, get a 3D to 12 AA battery holder and some good high current batteries first. Then, I'll figure out if I can get that to fit in my stock tube. Otherwise, I'll get a bored one. How about a Osram 54248 (FCR) lamp. 100 watt 12 v 3600 lumens, GY6.35 base, and stock 50 hr life? Oh, can anyone point me to the hot rater? I can't seem to remember where to look for it. Oh, with a light like this, what would be the best reflector? I'm using the FM dual smooth reflector in my mag 85. Would an orange peel or stipple be better on this or smooth? Thanks again for the replies. You have been very helpful:)

in my mag 100 I'm going to use a FM's MOP reflector but I really don't know how the beam looks like with a SMO or any other type of reflector...

I think that the bulb you are talking about is the osram 64625???
if yes....I can say that we are going to use the same bulb...:D
in the post #7 I have said that I wanted to use the 64623 but now I have decided for the 625 becouse I can find it very easly in italy:)

it is the USL bulb (5th position in the most powerful maglite mods list)
and in the USL it is powered by 11 high current AA nimh batteries but I'd like to drive it with 12...don't know if possible

HID killer? Grab a hammer and hit it real hard. I bet a direct hit to the front of that HID light and it'll be dead almost instantly.

:nana:

Hehehehehe, yep, that'd probably work. And all the other ER staff that witnessed our little comparison were saying how his light was so amazing and superior to mine.

Just imagine seeing their faces after turning on a 100 watt mag light:)
Ask VWTim, he made a Mag133 or something insane like that. We played with it at a get-together and it was loads of fun trying to burn paper and stuff. ;)

The thing I like about hotwire Mags is that they're total sleepers. I remember the time when I showed my hotwire minimag (by AuroraLite) to a neighboor. He could not figure out why his minimag wasn't as bright. "But I just put new batteries in mine..." If he only knew... :sssh:

Hi Aaron,

Now, I'm not an expert, but I think you will have a tough time beating an HID for throw with a "stock-looking" mag. You wouldn't have too much trouble producing more lumens, just look around for the various 100-watt class recipes.

The problem for throw is the 2-inch Mag reflector, combined with the (relative to an HID arc) incan filament. You will not be able to get the collimation that the HID is capable of with an equivalent-size reflector. See some of Ra's threads about his short-arc HID monster thrower for reference.

I have found that a USL (a 2D-sized, 100-watt Mag) impresses the heck out of folks, especially when you set something on fire with it. Pop one of Fivemega's 2.5 or 3 inch head on it and you get some pretty decent throw, too. Something similar might be your best bet if you don't want to go with HID.

I'm most interested in total light output. I'd like to get a different head, then I can either have it look like a stock mag or have the ability to throw on a 2.5 or 3" head for some decent throw. I'm thinking an FM 3D to 12 AA holder, some high current batteries, a 100 watt Osram 54248 (3600 lumens at 12v) bulb, KUI high temp socket, LOP or MOP reflector and UCL. Hopefully I can use a stock mag body, otherwise I'll have to see if I can find a quad bored 3D mag somewhere. Thanks

Where would the best place to get some high current AA batteries? I've tried cheapbatterypacks.com and they did not have any. Heard they are getting some Elite 1700's rated at 30 amps soon. I just checked Amondotech and they have 1800 mah Titanium batteries rated at 18 amp discharge. Would those be ok or should I wait for the Elite 1700s?

interesting question!:green:
I'd like to know the same thing...:D
however, some time ago I have read here that CBP elites will be better than titaniums.

Have you considered building something with like 20 Cree LEDs? I have thought about doing it myself but lack the $$$$ for such a project. Spent it all on machine tools. ;-)

Don't really want to use LEDs, plus too much $$. Looking to spend around $200 or so. The elite batteries do sound like they should work pretty good.
