Idiots guide to battery technology and safety

As title really, is there an idiots guide as to the differing chemical technoloigies, their pro's and con's and correct proceedures to charge, discharge and use, store etc?

I have been coming across a number of threads lately where these technolgies have been causing failures including one fire in a house and one laser device physically exploding and injuring the user?

Forewarned is forearmed as they say.

I didnt post this in batteries as I think this is an issue that affects all users hence I went for a more general section.

What made you think you would find it in the LED Flashlights section, rather than the Batteries section?
