If you had any doubts about the OPALEC

doubt no more...

Last night I was playing with, I mean scientifically comparing, my LI and my opalec. It was very dark and my eyes were night adjusted for only about 10 mins. before the comparison.

I won't discuss the LI in detail, other than to say it is one Bright S.O.B. with a nice hot spot and great coverage.

But the Opalec, hoooo baby. 50' from my position was a chair against a wall. Without out any light, the chair was undetectable (and remember it is my house, my chair and I knew it was there). The Opalec clearly illuminated it and cast a mild shadow against the wall. It also made visible an area about 8x8 on the wall.

I had no more distance inside to play with, so I started rumaging in darker closets, flashing various items in the darkened rooms, looking under the sofa, behind the washer, examining plumbing connections in the basement, checking for spidey webs in corners and that sort of thing. It handled all tasks with ample light to spare.

So then I used it to read. News print was no problem, no eye strain at all.

As I was doing all this, and even now, I kept thinking, " Holy cr@p, I have this much light available to me for the next 9 1/2 hours with some more to spare after that."

This light stays on me or near me at work and home and will go camping/hiking/ flying as well....along w/ my LI and E2 (and what ever else I have room for)

I submit that this light, while not as bright as some, is plenty bright for the house and field at night and can't be beat(yet) for its constant longevity...plus, it is a really satisfying mod for the techno challenged among us (although I fear I am in the minority on that front).

I'm a huge fan of the Newbeam's. I bought one a couple months back, did some evaluation with it, and ended up buying a couple more last week. Going to keep on in my Disaster kit loaded with lithiums, along with an M2. And the other two are daily use/power outage lights (lots of lightning here in "sunny" FLA).
I find they still work quite well in candle mode...expecially if they're inside and can bounce off the ceiling.
A very easy mod to make and the regulation is fantastic. The red LED is a very nice touch.

I just about went blind trying to look directly INTO that little red LED. It isn't very bright from the side, but heck if you can ever see it head-on without giving yourself some blind spots...

Darell,
I have a Direct Drive LS you can look for the "red LED" in if you want. TX

Just got my Opalec yesterday. Wow! This thing is perfect....bright, steady, small, long-lasting. And it came really fast by Priority Mail and with a thank-you note.

Actually, I'm a little bummed. I've been doing led conversions for several years in an attempt to build the perfect light. Now the Opalec has covered all the bases better than anything I have been able to build. Guess I'd better consider ordering another one.

Dang it! I thought the Arc SLS was going to take care of my flashlight fixes for a while. But, noooo! Now I've got to order an Opalec for the MiniMag rattling around. Wait a minute. Technically, it's not really a flashlight... Hmmmm.

Yes, I must say - this is the best mod I've ever managed to build too

It is exactly what I'd like to be able to do... if I had any skill in this area. The good news is that I'm quite proficient with my credit card.

Darell,
You done Broke the Code. The secret is not to "be genius", but to be able to "afford genius". Just ask Bill Gates.

That's what free enterprise is all about. You're paid for what you do well...then you pay other's for what they do well. Great system.

Yeah the Opalec is awesome. I like the minimag body and if it ever gets messed up u can buy a new one for 8 bucks.

I agree, I agree.

I love my Newbeams. I only wish that somebody (oh, let's say Peter Gransee) would build a custom light around the technology. I'm not a huge fan of the Minimag, but I like them more now than I ever have before. What a great use for unknown-remaining-capacity AA batteries! I've even taken to using the Newbeam as a quick battery tester for pairs of AAs.

Dropping that thing in there makes you feel like a modding superstar, doesn't it?

bewshy,
now they're even less than that. I just bought a bunch of em, with batteries and the nylon holdster for $5. mustve been a closeout sale or somthing.

Yeah, got my NewBeam yesterday, It is GREAT!
I recommend everyone to give their mini mag a chance to return to service

Mine was in the dust for three years

although I don't have an Attitude, I have a Batonlite. Now my mag is much better with voltage regulation. The hotspot of NewBeam win the batonlite's in fresh batteries too!

GIVE YOUR ONCE LOVED MAG A CHANCE!

Just got my Opalec Newbeam as well. Love it. Brighter, whiter, longer-lasting that the stock bulb. Only thing left to test is the throw....

Edit: ...And it beats the stock Mag bulb in pure light output. Tightening down the incandescent to beat the NB gives a worthlessly tight beam.
