Re: SMD High Dome no Hassle Drop In

Sure, you can build one! At least you will never know unless you try. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif

lambda,
Paypal sent.
Please check your paypal.
Thanks.

Is it okay if I use 3W for SMD kit ?

Re: SMD High Dome no Hassle Drop In

I've had a blast building these kits. All have been successful. On the SMD+ all mine have had either a TX1J or TV0J installed. They sure make lots of light. In comparison I'd say they are about the same light output as say a BB500. And more fun to build than the BB. Some day soon I should like to buy some more.

One thing I'm curious about though. Is there now or will there ever be available a similar type of kit for a pill that will run off either a single AA or AAA or N cell? I don't expect such a beist will be able to deliver as much current. However I'm still interested.

cheers,
zwf

Re: SMD High Dome no Hassle Drop In

What kind of "thermal epoxy" do you use to fill the inside of the SMD ?
Is it "Artic alumina(thermal compound)" or "Arctic Alumina Adhesive (2 Part Epoxy)" ?
Can I use one of these according to the price ? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Re: SMD High Dome no Hassle Drop In

use the 2part adhesive epoxy. The thermal compound is just grease, and well, will ooze out everywhere...

Re: SMD High Dome no Hassle Drop In

A while back there was quite a long discussion on what to use to pot sammies in. The discussion took place I beleive in "The Sandwich Shoppe" forum. At the end of it all I chose to use JB Kwik. Have had no problems at all. It's readily available, cheap, and seems to meet all the requirements mentioned in that discussion.

Re: Sneek Peek - Illuminator SMD: ILLPILL Updat

1 amp draw?

Is 1.9 amps off freshly charged NiMH outside the norm? That's what mine's pulling, yielding a little more light than 600mA into a MadMax Q3J.

Re: Sneek Peek - Illuminator SMD: ILLPILL Updat

I wouldn't be surprised if your SMD Pill numbers were right at drawing 1.9 amps. Looking at my run-time charts and doing a little calculating my SMD draws 1636mA (1.6 amp). Even if I compensate for a hot battery by calculating a run-time 5 minutes after the run started I get a power draw of 1500mA.

My SMD is about the brightness of a Madmax Lite but a lot bluer emitter tint. The SMD is not that bright and has about half the run-time of a Sandwich.

Re: Sneek Peek - Illuminator SMD: ILLPILL Updat

So it really is a much less (like ~45%) efficient converter that is well regarded because of the legend of the Lambda name, and the (normally) half-a-MadMax price?

Re: Sneek Peek - Illuminator SMD: ILLPILL Updat

How does the SMD+ compare against the HD Superpill? Which one is brighter?

(Still deciding whether I need one of these or not..) /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/icon23.gif

Re: Sneek Peek - Illuminator SMD: ILLPILL Updat

I'm sure the HD Superpill will be brighter. I'm just kinda trying to figure out how Lambda sells any SMD+ units when (it appears) the MadMax Lite is as bright and runs twice as long <shrug>.

You need some sort of minimag mod. Opalec, one of the two Terralux, or the MadMax lite are my rec's.

Because the SMD+ is only $25.00 and that includes postage within the continental U.S. Also, the run time is not too bad with the SMD+. People really should read what Lambda has to say about it on his webpage ..... here.

Some have said it is comparable to the BB500. I have an SMD+ and like it, for the money I think it's a decent value.

Yup, but they're all sold out. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif Anyone have a spare one to sell if it'll work with a 1AA miniminiMag?

Re: Sneek Peek - Illuminator SMD: ILLPILL Updat

I will consider selling mine once the MadMax arrives, but I do not think the SMD+ will work with 1AA. The 3W HD superpill will.

I did read what lambda said about it and the runtime chart is worth looking at. 75 min or so off 1850mAh NiMHs.

I thought the BB500 was in the 70-80% efficiency range and therefore should pull almost one amp off a pair of NiMH, not just shy of two amps. It'd be a lot easier to be "fair" about these comments, of course, if I could measure the luxeon's current. If the current is 650mA+, then I probably have something below P-bin, but at least I couldn't gripe about the circuit.

Re: Sneek Peek - Illuminator SMD: ILLPILL Updat

The SMD will not work with a single AA alkaline or NiMH battery unless a single cell light is running a rechargeable 14500 battery.

Re: Sneek Peek - Illuminator SMD: ILLPILL Updat

I glad Lambda still has a couple of these SMD+ kits around. I I just got three kits and I'm having a fun time building them. Since I had a couple of TX1J emitters laying around these kits make a nice and fun early-winter project.

Has anyone else completed a SMD+ kit? How'd you like it? What emitter did you use?

Re: Sneek Peek - Illuminator SMD: ILLPILL Updat

I have built 7 of the LAMBDA SMD+ kits. The first one was a LD BIN Q5K 1W. Next was HD BIN QW0H 1W. Then a BIN SYOK 3W.
The rest are BIN TWOK 3W. I used a copper spacer under the Luxeon so I could use the modified mini maglite reflector. I also purchased one MiniPro Light Engine with QW0H 1W HD Luxeon from Lambda. Love them all. I'm still buying the kits when they are available. Waiting for the MiniPro kit to be released.

Re: Sneek Peek - Illuminator SMD: ILLPILL Updat

I have bought nearly 25 kits. The earlier ill pill was good and very cheap. The new SMD+'s are very bright. I got T binned lux III's hooked to them and they work very well. I've got all the guys at work building them now! Kevin always goes the extra mile -- one time shipping me a duplicate order when the original failed to show up (it fainally arrived and took 6 months to-the-day to get to me -- USPD!). $7 bucks -- a good value! The only problem is that he sells out of stuff pretty frequently. I think that also says a lot about how people like his stuff.
