It was absolutely true. Videotape came along in the 50s and she was on live TV before that. She was even on an experimental TV broadcast way back in 1939 when she was only 17.

It came out in the news today that the final thing she said just before she passed was "Allan," the name of her beloved late husband Allan Ludden.
