infrared thermometer

Help Support CPF:

I have the IR-201, and it has been a great tool. I teach physics, and I have a bunch of "Harbor Freight Special" IR thermometers for my students, but I wanted a better quality one for my own use.

The only thing 'cheap' about it is that it has fixed emissivity (at 0.95), so if you want to adjust emissivity for different surfaces you'll need to step up to the next better model. For general purpose work--this one is fine.

I have the Thermohawk 200 and it's sort of a toy, certainly not worth 60 bucks. I think I paid 20 for it. Harborfreight has some other cheap ones that may be comparable. If I can find my Thermohawk and you want it cheap, send me a PM.

Glad to find a CPF thread on this. Looked around the web and can't find any straightforward reviews that sum these up.

I want one for prowling the house for cold spots, with a narrow enough angle/long enough useful working distance to check the ceilings and get an idea where there's a problem with the insulation above them before I go crawl into our low little attic, then check up there for the corresponding warm spot.

Hoping for more comments and pointers to reviews if any.

Hank- Im the op that started this thread. I ended picking up the the same model as the exotech but its branded under sears craftsman. Its a sturdy unit perfect for what your looking at doing. I have used on my jeep to looking for areas where the insulation is thin on the ceiling. It works flawlessly. As for accuracy - dont know how accurate it is, but +/- 5 degrees doesnt really concern me. Battery life is excellent, even with use of the laser, its still on its first set being used almost every week. Its got a switch behind the batteries for F or C. Laser accuracy is not great being off by about 1/2" form about 2 feet away.

For what your looking to do I would say its the model you want. I got it on sale at Sears for 49$.

Sounds usable.
# Measuring ratio 1:6 target to distance (1 in. spot at 6 in.)
# Accurate to 6 feet

Laser half inch error at 2' (measuring a 4" circular field) is 'good enough'

I'll hold on for a day or three and see if anyone else comes up with more ideas, or else wait til after holiday sales. I think it'll stay cold enough in our house for a few months!

I really like my fluke mini 62. It came free with a fluke mutlimeter all for $189 (about the cost of the meter alone) It as accurate to at least 20 feet and has a 10:1 beam factor. Pez

Another for the Fluke Mini 62. I use mine to check tire temps, AC/heating, general temps of the pooter components....tons of uses. 😀 For smaller stuff, I have two of the Harbor Freight keychain units. Not super accurate but does fine for ball park readings. I carry these to check temps at the local markets when food shopping.
