A very dark world.
Got my (first) Inova X-5 a few days ago. I haven't had the time to do the routine freezer/icewater tests on it yet... but this promises to be one very nice little light. If only it was available in Stainless Steel; I could start giving them to my friends as "works of art". (for the benefit of my friends who are tired of getting mere flashlights as gifts from me)

According to the instructions inside, there is a "surgical stainless alloy" model available, that is said to shrug off being run over by an ordinary tank. The aluminum one is only rated for being run over by a car with rubber tyres. It says, and I quote, "Drive a car over the aluminum model or a tank over the stainless steel model... it does not matter"

If I get one, I guess I'll have to stick with the aluminum model. I have a car, but have no idea where I'ld come up with a TANK!

Welcome back, Stainless. hhmmm, I wonder what a flat stainless steel LED light be like to operate.

What is mine, aluminum? It is a bright, shiny piece of art.

I love it.

Why am I not embarrassed to profess my love for flashlights?

OK, where's the best place to get one of these? Who has tye best price? How does it compare to my Arc LS?

If I get one I'll "reverse" engineer it using
304 or 316 stainless. Hmmm, I have some titanium stock lying around also.

fracman, because you are fully *switched on*

For all kinds of whatever reasons, we love them. They're lovable things !!
We don't need excuses - "Free the light inside you !"

Shame that Inova decided not to release the Stainless steel version. KT, did you post that a Carbon-fibre model might be in the works ?
(I enjoy my X5, even though it's not an Incand.

Gman, I wish you luck - how are you going to remove the works from the head ? That contact post is one of the beauties of the design.
Now, if you were to make up some Stainless steel sleeves, glue fixed, leaving it a plain cylindrical shape, with just a small rim to help retain the WriteRight, that could even be a saleable item on CPF ......

Jahn,
I have "second-hand" info that a carbon fiber model is in R&D.

As for the cheapest place to get one. I paid $35.25 DELIVERED, it should arrive in a few days. I'll let you know where I got it after I actually receive it and verify it is indeed a new Inova X5 aluminum finnish.

I contacted countycomm.com and they quoted $35 for the X5 with $5 US shipping, and $2 for each spare battery.

Hmm...Do I hear any votes for a group buy?

I got my Inova X5 and I am very impressed with it.

I did have it flicker a few times, with the head screwed all the way down (off position)! Anyone else have this happen?

I also put a web page together if anyone wants to see more pictures of the X5 and a few beam shots I took with it against a few other lights.

You can see them here: http://www.geocities.com/da_shwartz/flashlight.html

Sean, I can't work out how it could flicker with the head screwed down ?? It's only 2/3rds of a turn to the on position, but it moves the head about 2mm.
Mine did flicker a few times when it was on, but I solved that with some conductive lubricant.

Checked out your site, btw. Sean, please label the lights, I can't work out what the flat one at the top right of your collection is ?

Your daughter's a Cute kid !
Why is it that kids like flashlights, but then most of them grow out of it ......

Mr. Ted Bear,

That diagram is interesting. My x5 has the batteries in reverse, so that the buttons on the cells point away from the plunger. I guess that's one way to make the contact more secure.

Gman,

I think the Arc LS with one 123 cell is much brighter for the first hour. Then the x5 is as bright or brighter for hours. But when the the x5 is very dim, if you take the cells and put one into the LS, it is still fairly bright for several minutes! I guess thats the work of voltage regulation.

So Sean,
Let us know where you bought your X5 for $35 delivered?

Hey guys' I have a problem with my X-5 but fixed it.:

sometimes there are "hotspots" in the contacts. Like if you turn it to different places, it is dimmer and brighter. well, I cleaned the batteries, contacts and all, and cleand the bottom of the case with a LONG Q-tip. Then I cleand the spring-loaded contact pin. I then continued to "excersize" the pin by pushing it in and out. Tried it. It had no more "hotspots" afterwards. Hope this helps someone out.

This is what I did too, it seemed to help.

The flicker problem I had happened with the head ALL THE WAY DOWN! I handed it to my wife and she was looking at it, it began to flicker! I took it from her and slapped it into the palm of my hand and it came on (with the head screwed down all the way in the off position!) As soon as I turned the head slightly it shut off again. It did this one other time and never again since. The reason I sold my Lightwave 2000 is because it would turn on by itself, but I think I'm keeping the X5 for a long time! It fits perfectly in my back pocket.

I got it from John at Dark Star Inc. I believe he has both black & titanium.

Just send him an email: [email protected]

He sold me one for $31.00 + $4.25 shipping. You might even be able to talk him into cheaper USPS standard shipping but the $4.25 was for Priority Mail. I snail mailed him a Money Order on Friday and had the X5 on the following Thursday!
