I just tried one cell - didn't measure it on a meter, but it's about "half brightness". If you want to throw away those photons...I don't see why it wouldn't work. Maybe nice for night vision purposes. The X5 or X5T are indeed bright torches, guess you could "tone it down" a little! You know you're going to lose runtime, of course.
Are you sure I can't trade you something, I hate to see a good torch go through all that "pain"! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif How about two new Pelican L1s w/breakaway lanyards & extra batteries and a new Streamlight Keymate w/extra batteries also? Ok, you're driving a hard bargain, I'll throw in a couple generic "Photon style" white keychain LED lights also!!
