Does anyone have any experience with very high output ir leds? I've been experimenting with a to-66 package but have found it very difficult to focus the light from such a wide flat source. Any thoughts?

tough question i guess. just to clarify, the led package is a quarter inch wide. It has lots of light, just can't focus it. I guess my question is how do you focus a (lambertian?) source that's that wide?

Utilize a very large reflector or lens.
You may also want to try a fresnel lens. Start with a cheap page magnifier found at most office supply stores.
