Is that Surefire Ultra really worth it?

I really like that SF U2... does anyone have some runtimes on the 6 settings? The website says 40hrs on low, but what about high, med high, etc...?

This torch looks really cool but $279 seems like some serious coin!

First, welcome to cpf. Check out the flashlight reviews and led modifications site for a nice review on the U2.

The U2's good is that it is a well made light with a nice beam that can easily be changed between levels. Its bad is that it uses an older led (a couple of years ago's:) ) technology and it goes through batteries faster than the newer led's (cree and the like) and it is not as bright. (100 lumens...vs. 200 lumens for a Q5 cree light)

Surefire is coming out with some new multi level lights in a few months that for the same kind of money will be brighter and possibly more effecient.

So... for my vote... the U2 is no longer worth the $$$. Others here would disagree with me....but that is my .02. Keep looking in the reviews section.... and use the search feature. You will find some great lights!

Thanks Woodrow, great advice! :)

Didn't even realize the U2 was that old.

Many people who have the light would say it's worth it, but I say if you want a variable output light controlled by a ring, wait for what Surefire releases next. 200 lumen + variable beam pattern or 400 lumen(Even some 1 AA lights can hit 100 lumen).

If you just want variable output(no preference to how the modes are changed), then there are many other lights on the market.

:welcome:

You have another good opportunity. When in the next few weeks the new types become available there will probably be a number of U2's on sale on CPFM and for a good price.

BTW even when I buy a new UA2 I will keep my old and trusted U2 Ultra, a real milestone in LED flashlights. ;)

Well welcome to CPF, the U2 was and still is an amazing light, it was a real breakthrough in the highend light market and was loved by many(myself included but I gave mine to a Soldier friend). However, Surefire will be realeasing new lights into the "U" family. Dropping in May is the Surefire UA2 Optimus. This light took everything that made the U2 amazing, added twice the output, and tons of new amazing features. Surefire does not have a page up on it already but Battery Junction which is a highly liked SF Dealer on here has already started a Pre-Order and last I spoke with Matt the ownere there were still plenty of lights left for the first shipement. That page with full specs is availible Here. Or you can download Surefire's 2008 Illumination tool's catalog at www.Surefire.com (To download the catalog right click the link and save the target as)
