I've never heard anything about a diet speeding up growth, but they do make stuff to put on your nails that is supposed to make they grow faster and make them stronger as well.

I know gelatin makes nails stronger although I don't know if it speeds up nail growth. I'll also add that knowing you're male I was a little bit disturbed upon reading the title of the thread, at least until I read the first post. ;)

My woman has VERY long nails. She swears her hand lotion makes them grow faster and stay strong.
Ouch! Does she use them like Wolverine in X-Men?

On another note, I've often wondered how people can grow such long nails without them breaking. Being male, I of course don't intentionally do anything like that. However, when I forget to cut them for a few weeks, and they get much past my finger tips, they start breaking. That reminds me to cut them. When I see females with one or two inch real nails, my only conclusion is either genetically their nails are very strong, or they just don't do anything which could potentially break them. My mom tried in vain many times to grow her nails. Because of all the housework and gardening she does, they never make it much past the ends of the fingers without breaking.

When you use your fingernails as screwdrivers all the time, it's hard to keep them intact or grow them out evenly. My right index fingernail is always chipped because I sometimes find myself without a little greenie tweaker when I need one. It seems like a valid reason for seeking out a means of making them stronger.

I've heard that Jello is good for fingernails because of the gelatin/keratin content. I haven't tested that theory myself 'cause I'm not a big fan of jello, but it might be worth looking into.

Don't know about the diet aspect of it all, but for me, I noticed that everytime we use latex based paint at work, there's a need for me to cut/trim my fingernails more often than usual.

Increasing blood flow to your hands will stimulate growth. Giving your significant other a massage or similar physical hand activities. Not just wiggling the fingers. ;) Some of my activities use one hand more than the other and I often find that on that particular hand I'll have to trim the nails more frequently. Like hand rubbing my knife blades...

Of course, don't rule out a good balanced diet is part of the combination not only for nail growth but other tissues.

As for gelatin... This was an advertising campaign that began in the 1890s when Charles Knox created gelatin from leftover slaughterhouse waste. Knox claimed that this waste material would strengthen nails since cow's hooves were strong.

For a start, healthy nails do not have any halfmoons (look at nails at the top part edge where it meets the skin). The bigger the halfmoon that is an indication that it is lacking in vitamins.

Just eat lots of fruits.......good for your nails...

+1 on superglue. Before you start, wash your hands with soap and water to make your nails a bit wet and soft. Then carefully apply the glue to the nail. Be careful, since you can easily glue a couple of fingers together. The water in your wet skin and nails makes the glue set very quickly. It works wonders when you have a split nail that causes pain, especially if you snag it on clothing or objects.

read that article that RA40 linked to, it's very good.

Eating jello or other gelatin will not make your nails grow faster. When you eat something, you digest it down to it's most basic building blocks and then your body uses those to re-make the complicated structures that you're made from. It doesn't look at a complex bit of food and route that to similar structures in your body to be reused in total. Your intestines aren't smart enough to recognize something like "ooo that looks like gelatin send it over to the nails so they can grow faster!" thats just silly ;)

If you're not getting enough protein or regular nutrients then eating jello may help, but it's a simple protein and has no other nutrients and usually comes with lots and lots of sugar. So you'd be better off with a regular well balanced diet with enough generic protein so your body can heal damaged structures.

if you have a problem with the circulation in your fingers, then yes getting exercise or otherwise stimulating it can help things return to normal, but it wont speed it up beyond normal in an otherwise healthy individual. Going into space though does cause your nails and hair to grow more quickly, something about zero gravity, isn't that interesting? But it's hardly a cure for you ;) Luckily the skin under the break will toughen up over the next few days. Keep a bandaid on it to stop infection and dirt from getting to the sensitive tissue under your nail and it will get better.

Also the recommendation of crazy glue that Diesel_Bomber made isn't as outrageous as it sounds ;) Crazy glue is similar enough to medical adhesive that you can actually do this sort of thing. I've done it in the past with very good results. Clean the wound and dry it and put a drop of crazy glue on it to form a seal and it may help a lot with the pain of having it exposed. I've used it to fill some nasty cuts and gouges in the past, it never caused me any pain or stinging and it helped a lot to protect and hold things together. It will probably work even better on a nail as that doesn't flex very much. DOnt use too much though and get it all over the place.

That information is incorrect according to some sources and mom. See: http://www.healthboards.com/boards/archive/index.php/t-134286.html

Normally, the lunula, or half-moon, is white in color, indicating proper nutrition and good overall health. Blue lunula raise red flags that circulatory problems to the fingers may exist. Nails that are hard, brittle, and tend to split easily, may also be clues to poor circulation, infection, or disturbances of the glandular and nutritional systems. http://www.coolquiz.com/trivia/explain/docs/fingernail.asp

Prenatal vitamins. My wife is taking them and her nails are growing like crazy. And they're much stronger also.

Don't know about side effects for men though.

I don't mean to poke fun but this thread is hilarious.

Is your wife taking them because she's pregnant? Cause if thats the case then it's not the prenatal vitamins that is causing it but hormones ;) There was an interesting study done showing that there is a correlation between fingernail growth rates in the mother and the index of growth for the fetus over the same time. So the 2 things are potentially related. So it might be that you can expect a large and healthy baby ;)

Or if she's just taking them because she like swallowing giant pills you might want to re-think that. In addition to being expensive they have lots of iron and other stuff in them that you dont really want to take long term if you're not pregnant...
