Is there a flashlight that uses the CR2 battery?

Yoshi,
The CR2 is a 3-volt, lithium cell approximately half the length of a AA cell and 1/8-inch greater in diameter. I was thinking of using 4 CR2s with a 12-volt, Xenon, bi-pin bulb in a Maglite-size platform. Anyone have any comments before I try this?

Plenty of comments, but I'm not saying !

(Until I've had some more time to work on an idea I thought of. World of lights, watch out for a surprise !! )

The problem with CR2's is that they have so little to give, I *think* it's something like 6-800mAH, versus about 1300mAH for 123's. Anyone confirm that ?

Oh my god, I was just thinking the exact same thing a couple days ago when I was shopping for 123's, since the cr2 pile was just next to that.

Talk about a cool board, the topic appears just when you think about it! You don't even have to start a new topic!

Ok, I just got a bunch of CR2's and I'm trying stuff out. I won't say what because it's Jahn's Idea. If it works I'll give him all the credit.....stay tuned this won't take long.

Go, Yoshi go !!

And if it doesn't, it's all Yoshi's fault ......

Yoshi, looked at your page, but it could be up to 200 Lumens !

Ummm Yoshi, btw that's J-A-H-N, and/or lightlover (all lower case) (for the inevitable credits)
[ *something ridiculous ? is too silly a name for this (brilliant) idea .]
Unless it doesn't work, then we'll call it "Flexmodems Folly"

OOPS !

Shelby Chan, (aka Aluminium Overcast) (aka FineFive) (aka GhostGroup)

thought of this idea about 2 years ago.

(Does that prove that great minds think alike ? )

Shelby says that apparently there are concerns about CR2's not being able to kick out enough juice and possibly the thermal shutdown fuse being more sensitive.

Bubble burst,

Jahn,

Isn't it like night time over there? What are you still doing up? Anyway, Shelby was right. I put 3 CR2's in the M2 with the P91 bulb and the CR2's can't put out enough juice. It's about as bright as the P60 bulb. DOH. K-T's idea will be better I think. The SF lamps require too much juice, I'm going to radio shack to look around for a more suitable lamp.

NOTE: THIS IS ALL JAHN'S IDEA. I WAS FOOLED LIKE EVERYONE ELSE HERE, I AM AN INNOCENT VICTIM..........still determined to make this CR2 expiriment work somehow though. Maybe with an LED.

Yup, that was Shelby and I and ??? that tried that. I got three of them in a D2 and used the P90 lamp. It works for short bursts, but after about 30 seconds it starts to yellow. Running a P91 it is yellow right away, much dimmer then the P60. So I went back to the P61 (same brightness as the P90) and 2 cells. It stays pretty bright for about 5 minutes constant before yellowing, even longer with the new SF 123 batteries in there

or if you only use it for short bursts you can get almost 25 minutes out of it. The Surefire batteries do help out in this situation.

I might try my idea today. I need to find a platform that uses 2AAs with some room - something like one of those "cheapies" - no offense intended to the makers of these
cool.gif
- that allow the AAs to rattle due to the extra room. I surmise that when the CR2s are installed, that rattle will not occur because the additional girth of the CR2 will "consume" that extra space. I saw one of those rubber Garrity models at my local hardware store. It might suffice. I prefer a mettalic platform, however. The search is on.

WOOPS, sorry Kogatana. I was referring to you and in the confusion I mixed you guys up!I was referring to your bi-pin 12volt idea.

KT, I wish you good luck with your CR2 project.

You have no competition from this quarter. I, a broken man, have vowed to experiment no longer.

The only benefit of *my* idea is that others will not waste their expensive CR2's, chasing after a dream.
(No, that waste of money will remain Yoshi's privilege, and Yoshi's alone.)

I was actually worried that when I tested it, the P91 might short, or explode or - something ......

Ummm - I assume the switch still worked properly ?

Anyone want to buy some brand new CR2's, just e-mail me.

Recently, I've pondered about at what phase of insanity a 50+ year old man must be in tinkering with such things. Not that I equate myself with he, but I remember the late, great US Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshal admitting to watching reruns of the Roadrunner cartoon series shortly before he passed on to that great courtroom in the sky. He said it comforted him to watch the "simpler and finer" things in life. I don't think I'll be watching that bird anytime soon, however, Wyle E. Cayote seems "interesting."

True entertainment is priceless. Heck if I ever needed money so support my SF habit, I'd trade in my SUV and get a cheapy poor man's SUV. Or maybe sell my house......live in an apartment...lol

The CR2's were only like $30..heck I spend that on a dinner with my wife
smile.gif
Come to think of it...wives buy Shoes and Clothing up the wazoooooo, so what gives them the right to complain just because we have some flaslights......

nullI just updated my SF section of my website by the way
